When it comes to traveling in Europe people often tend to stick to the same places. They’ll go shopping in Paris, cruise on the canals in Venice or quickly travel from one main city to the other. But what if I told you your holiday to Europe doesn’t have to be so generic? There are so many stunning hidden gems in Europe and some truly unique places still waiting to be discovered!
And yes, I know there are a lot of guides like this out there but none where the author (that’s me!🤪) only shares from personal experience. I think that’s also one of the main strengths from my blog: it’s a personal retelling of my own adventures and not just a compilation of popular things to do. So you can be sure that I’ve visited every single place in this article myself!
Of course I haven’t explored all of the hidden gems that Europe has to offer cause I can imagine that there’s an infinite amount! That’s why this blog post will also be regularly updated and every time I discover a truly unique place it will get a feature here.

🇪🇺 28 Hidden Gems & Unique Places in Europe You Should Visit
1. The 7 Hidden Trolls – Belgium 🇧🇪
The 7 Hidden Trolls have become a true phenomenon in Belgium and one of the most popular things to do during the past year in lockdown. These wooden giants were created by the artist Thomas Dambo and can be found at the recreational domain De Schorre in Boom. There are 7 wooden trolls in total and it’s a super fun activity to enjoy with kids or a bunch of friends!
If the name De Schorre rings a bell you’re not mistaken cause this is the exact same place where the insanely popular festival of Tomorrowland takes place every year. And now thanks to the trolls it’s one of the most unique places in Europe that you can visit!
One of the best tips I can give you is to plan your visit early in the morning so you can enjoy your search for the trolls without too many other people around you. In the afternoon the domain gets very crowded and you won’t have a minute to yourself.
🏡 WHERE TO STAY – There are plenty of options! Stay at one of the fancy hotels in Antwerp or opt for a cosy Bed & Breakfast in the charming town of Mechelen.

2. Hallerbos Forest – Belgium 🇧🇪
The Hallerbos Forest is one of the most magical places in Belgium and once every year its forest floor turns into a beautiful purple carpet of bluebells. This phenomenon usually happens halfway through April and lasts around 2 weeks. If you’re planning your visit to Belgium around this it’s pivotal to keep an eye on Social Media and on the blooming time that year.
This year for instance the bluebells were a little more than a week late due to the cold weather in April. If April is a warm month they’ll be in full bloom around the 18th of April.
Hallerbos Forest is located 20 minutes from Brussels and there’s plenty of parking space available if you’re going by car.
Important to know is that you can’t go in between the bluebells! You have to stay on the walking paths cause every single time that you step on a bluebell it will never grow back!
🏡 WHERE TO STAY – Stay at one of the luxurious hotels in the heart of Brussels or at a cosy Bed & Breakfast in Halle.

3. Chateau de Walzin – Belgium 🇧🇪
Chateau de Walzin, also known as Walzin Castle, is one of those hidden gems in Europe that you have to see to believe. It’s located close to Dinant and a must visit in the area.
There are several ways to visit this unique place in Europe: you can go on a beautiful hike which will also take you to the magical chateau de Vêves and the Furfooz park or you can simply drive to the parking lot closest to the castle! Another fun idea is to hire a kayak and go down the river Lesse. You can rent your kayak at Dinant Evasion from April 2021.
The castle itself can’t be visited cause it’s private property but that shouldn’t stop you from putting this magical place on your itinerary.

4. Étretat – France 🇫🇷
Étretat is a small town on the north coast of France and the perfect place for a weekend getaway. Besides being one of the cutest coastal cities in France it is mostly known for its enormous chalky white cliffs. It comes as no surprise that one of the top things to do in Étretat is to walk along these stunning cliffs. Some of them even go up as high as 90 meters!
For many years it has inspired artist from all over the world and it’s also the setting of Arsène Lupin, the novel and tv show about the gentleman burglar. Two further reasons to visit Étretat are its 18-hole golf course on one cliff and gardens on the other. Both of them offer stunning views over the town and seaside.
Le Jardin d’Étretat, a beautiful Asian-inspired garden, is a must visit if you love either Impressionism or contemporary art. This garden will leave you with Alice in Wonderland vibes and offers one of the most stunning views over the white cliffs.

Riquewihr is one of the cutest towns in entire France and a wonderful hidden gem in Europe. The most popular time to visit is during Christmas season when every building is pretty much drenched in Christmas decorations. This fairytale town in France is as tiny as can be but in spite of that it still served as the inspiration of Belle’s village in the Disney ‘Beauty & The Beast’.
Although most people come to France to visit either Paris, the Provence or its popular South coast, the Alsace region is definitely worth a visit. Besides Riquewihr you’ll be driving among vineyards, castles on top of hills and plenty of other cute towns such as Colmar and Eguisheim.
Riquewihr can be easily explored as part of a road trip through France and the region of Alsace is located close to the border of Germany. So if you want you can even hop over and explore some fairy tale towns there as well.
For visiting Riquewihr itself you won’t need more than a couple of hours but make sure to visit la Féerie de Noël, one of the cutest and most beautiful Christmas shops in entire France!
🏡 WHERE TO STAY – There are several options but I would opt for staying in one of these cute traditional houses such as Les Gîtes Coeur de Vigne or Hôtel le Saint Nicolas. If this is not your style and you want a little more luxury you’ll love Le B. Cottage or Le B. VINTAGE.

Located in Bavaria, in the South of Germany, this emerald green lake is a true marvel due to its surrounding landscapes. One of the top things to do at lake Eibsee is to simply walk around it. It’s an easy 1,5 hour hike that will dazzle you the entire time. What makes lake Eibsee extra special are the small islands in the centre of it and on a clear day you’ll be greeted by a picture perfect reflection of the surrounding landscape.
After hiking around you can sit down and relax at the terrace of the Eibsee hotel and enjoy a nice beer and a true Bavarian meal. All while overlooking the stunning lake Eibsee in all its glory.

8. Burano – Italy 🇮🇹
When most people visit Venice they don’t even bother visiting the other small islands of Murano or Burano. And it’s a shame cause especially Burano, with its rainbow colored streets is a stunning place to see. This beautiful little island is famous for its colorful fisherman’s houses and it’s laid back restaurants where you’ll eat seafood fresh from the lagoon.
The easiest way to reach Burano is to take Vaporetto number 12 from Fondamenta Nove (in Cannaregio). It departs every 30 minutes and first makes a stop at Murano before arriving to Burano. The ride takes around 45 minutes but along the way you will pass the cemetery island of San Michele, Murano, Torcello and small islands in the lagoon. Not to forget the view you get from Venice when departing is absolutely incredible.
One of Burano’s specialities is the fabrication of lace and did you know it can take up to a month to finish one single tablecloth? One of the other things you have to do on a day trip to Burano is try the delicious seafood! You will eat better on Burano than in any other place in Venice.

9. Lago Federa- Italy 🇮🇹
A visit to Lago Federa, also known as lake Federa, might not be immediately on your radar when planning a trip to the Dolomites, but it should be! Especially if you’re visiting this part of Italy in October you should make time to visit this more unknown spot in the Dolomites!
It’s one of the most beautiful lakes in the Dolomites and is surrounded by larches and during October these trees turn all shades of yellow and orange. I can assure you this is such a beautiful hike and you’ll be amazed by some of the views! The hike to Lago Federa is part of the famous Croda da Lago hike, which is one of the best hikes in the Dolomites. So if you have a full day planned to visit Lago di Federa I really recommend doing the full loop (11.3 km).
Other things to do in the Cortina area are driving the Passo Giau or hike to Lago della Beste and Lago Limides.
🏡 WHERE TO STAY – The closest town to Lago Federa is Cortina d’Ampezzo but other good options to stay are Misurina, Sesto and Dobbiaco.

10. Drachensee – Austria 🇦🇹
The Drachensee is one of the most beautiful lakes in Austria but to reach it you’ll have to do a ton of climbing! The hiking route to the Drachensee starts at the Ehrwald cable car and from here you have two options: either you take the cable car up or you also hike up the first part. It’s a pretty steep trail but it does come with some very rewarding views!
After reaching the cable car stop you’ll first encounter another beautiful lake called Seebensee. The trail towards the Seebensee is wide, flat and easy and comes with a big crowd during the day. To reach the Drachensee you’ll have to hike past the Seebensee and start hiking upwards. It’s a tough climb but I promise you it’s worth it! At the top you’ll find the Coburger Hütte which is the perfect place to enjoy a refreshing drink or a local meal.
🏡 WHERE TO STAY – There’s nothing as rewarding as coming back from a strenuous hike and relaxing at a wonderful hotel. You can do so at the wonderful spa of the PURE Resort and the Romantik Hotel Spielmann.

The trail is easy and pretty flat and even if you have no stamina at all you’ll love this gorgeous walk!
At the other side of the lake you’ll find a local restaurant and there’s also a boat rental for during the Summer months!
This area is mostly known for the world famous wellness hotel the Aquadome, which is only 15 minutes driving from the lake. A little further down the road you’ll also find a bunch of cable cars leading up into the mountains and to the 007 Elements James Bond museum.

12. Alpstein – Switzerland 🇨🇭
The Alpstein mountain range in Switzerland is one of those places that you have to see for yourself to actually believe it. And if I had to be completely honest, this was my favourite area that I visited in entire Switzerland. It’s still off the radar from mass tourism and most of the traills you’ll pretty much have all to yourself.
There are a couple of stunning places here but the ones you surely can’t miss are:

But what makes Foroglio truly special is the spectacular waterfall in the background which makes the entire place look like a fairy tale town. Make sure to walk down to take a closer look at the waterfall and go for a little swing between the trees. After exploring you can enjoy a drink or meal at La Froda and you can even stay as a guest in some of these stone houses.
🏡 WHERE TO STAY – The area around Foroglio was one of my favorites to drive through and I know you’ll have an amazing time staying here! Try Pensione Boschetto and stay in one of the prettiest towns in ticino!

Iceland is my favourite country to explore in the entire world and Kvernufoss is one of those hidden gems in Europe that you should visit as soon as possible! Every year this stunning waterfall gets more and more popular but for now it’s still pretty quiet when you’re visiting it.
To get to Kvernufoss you have to park at the Skogar Museum close to Skogafoss and located right next to the ring road (R1). From here walk to the right and you’ll see a small ladder going over a fence. To reach Kvernufoss you need to climb across it and walk into the canyon.
What makes Kvernufoss extra special is that you can also walk behind this waterfall!

18. Noordwijkerhout – Netherlands 🇳🇱
Tulip season in the Netherlands! It’s one of the most popular times and every year thousands of people travel to the Netherlands to see this phenomenon. But 90% of them only visit the world famous Keukenhof. In the meantime you actually see the most beautiful fields if you rent a bicycle and drive from Voorhout to Noordwijkerhout.
When planning a trip to visit the tulip fields in Holland there are a few things to take into consideration.
First things first, you need to plan out which flowers you would like to see in bloom. Starting end of march the first flowers will go in bloom namely the narcissus. All of the fields will turn to yellow and a hint of orange can already be seen. After the narcissus the hyacints will start to blossom and show different shades of pink, purple and even white.
It isn’t until half of april that the first tulips will start to show their colours. So if you are solely interested in seeing tulips, half of april might be a little too early in the season and I would advise you to wait until the end of april since at the very beginning of the season there’s also is a big floral parade that can cause a lot of disturbance regarding traffic.
🏡 WHERE TO STAY – The best place to stay if you’re spending a weekend in this area is either Noordwijkerhout or Lisse. Another option is to visit the flower fields as part of a day trip from Amsterdam.

19. Posbank – Netherlands 🇳🇱
The heather fields in the Netherlands are a true sight to behold! Once every year the national park Veluwezoom turns into a beautiful purple haze. This location is truly special in the Netherlands cause for most part the country is pretty much as flat as a pancake. But not here! The rolling hills at the national park add an extra perspective to its purple carpet and it ‘s the ideal place to go for a morning walk.
Besides spotting the stunning heather fields you can also spot a lot of wildlife at the national park, especially in the early morning. The most famous look out point is called Posbank and you can actually reach it by car. But one very important detail is that you can’t drive up before sunrise or drive down after sunset! It’s during these twilight moments that the wildlife is roaming around and chances are high you could hit a deer crossing the road.
🏡 WHERE TO STAY – The closest cities to Posbank are Arnhem and Apeldoorn.
