Instagram can be an amazing tool to get more blog traffic, but only when used right.
First things first. To fully comprehend this blog post you need to know the meaning of some blogging terms and why they are really important if you want your blog to stand out!
Why you should install Google Analytics
Google Analytics is one of the most powerful tools that you can have for your blog. It gives you detailed information about your users such as:
- Where they come from
- Which device they use
- How they came to your website
- The amount of page views
- The amount of sessions
- The amount of unique visitors
- The bounce rate of your website
If you want to grow your blog and monetise it you have to have a deeper understanding of what these metrics mean. Cause for instance Mediavine requires you to have 25 000 sessions/month.
What are page views
The amount of page views are calculated by how many times 1 unique visitor clicks on and through your blog during 1 session.
What is a session
A session starts when someone visits your website. But the most important part is to keep your visitors interested for a longer period of time. A session can include multiple page views which means a lower bounce rate (more on that later).
In this blog post I will give you tips on how to get longer sessions with more page views and thus a lower bounce rate!
One session can last up to 30 minutes. If a visitor clicks multiple pages within these 30 minutes this will only count as 1 session. If however a visitor comes back to your website after these 30 minutes this will count as an entirely new session!
What is a bounce rate
The bounce rate is the percentage of people that click away from your website after visiting just one page. Basically this means that the higher your bounce rate is the less interesting some people find your blog in total.
To lower your bounce rate you want your visitors to at least click through ones when they visit your blog.
How To Double Your Blog Traffic Through Instagram
Below I will explain you not only how to get more visitors to your blog. But also some tips and tricks that I learned along the way so your followers will actually click through on your blog.
Never link to a single blog post in your bio
While this might lead to some traffic towards your blog it will also result in a high bounce rate.
Why? The people that click on that link are usually only interested in this one subject. So after reading your blog post they will most likely click away. So while this might lead to some more page views it won’t get you the results that you’re after.
Create your own landing page for your Instagram bio
This is one of the BEST tips out there and I know about it thanks to Christine from liveloveruntravel.com.

What is a landing page?
A landing page is a stand alone page that people get redirected to when clicking on a link. This landing page can then lead to several other pages and posts on your blog.
Why do I have to create my own landing page?
There are a lot of programs out there that allow you to easily create a multi-link page. For instance ‘Linktr.ee’ is one of the more famous ones. But what actually happens is that when people click this link in your bio these clicks all go to ‘Linktr.ee’. So you’re basically losing half or more than half of your page visits! Crazy no?!
If you create your own landing page that click goes straight into your pocket. So by doing this you will actually double your amount of page views!
Bonus! Since people will obviously click through on this page it will result in a lower bounce rate!
Other times people won’t even click through to your website and simply close your landing page. But where otherwise these views would have been for a third party website, this time they are all for you!
How do I create my own landing page?
This one is really easy! Simply add a new page to your website and name it. Mine for instance is called InstaLinks. This way I can easily find it back between all of my other pages.
Next you add the links. In WordPress you can for instance work with headings or quotes. I opted for the quotes cause I prefer the layout of it in my specific theme.
Then select the text and link it to the specific page you want your visitors to be referred to.
You can take a look at how my landing page works here.
Ofcourse this page won’t be visible when people visit your website through another search engine or Social Media channel.
Promote your new blog post in your caption
There is no better way to promote a new blog post then by telling your followers why they should read it through an engaging caption.
Make sure that the photo also fits with the blog post.
Don’t forget to put emphasis on the fact that the link is in your bio!
Below you can find some examples that I did over the past months!
Promote your new blog post in your stories
There are so many cool apps out there to create beautiful and engaging stories. When posting a story know that a video will perform better than a regular photo.
Why? Cause a photo will only last for 4-5 seconds, a video can last up to 15 seconds!
If you have over 10K followers you can even add a swipe up link. If not, put in a disclosure that they can find the link in your bio.
If you’re referring people to your landing page make sure it is up to date! You don’t want visitors to click away because they can’t find what they are looking for!
How to properly use a swipe up link
Something I always used to do before is put a direct link to a blog post as my swipe up link. Once I learned about the importance of click throughs I am now trying different things.
For instance if I have several blog posts on China then I will now link to the page were all of these posts are visible. If a visitor then sees a blog post that they are interested in they might click on it! That means at least 2 page views instead of just 1! And if not then at least I still have that 1 visit!
By doing this, you actually have nothing to lose and everything to gain!

Don’t spam your followers
When promoting your blog posts on your stories remember to not overdo it. I usually chose to promote 1 blog post/page per day and change it up between travel guides, photo spots and tutorials.
Get story mentions by other Instagrammers
How the hell are you supposed to do that?
Easy!
There are several options
- Include their content in your blog post. Always make sure to embed the link to their Instagram profile or blog post. When promoting your blog post on your stories make sure to tag them so they know that you’re promoting their content in your blog. It’s ALWAYS fun to be included in someone’s post, even if it’s a super small account, that doesn’t even matter.
For instance if someone would refer to me I would always give their blog post a big shoutout in my stories! - Write a blog post about who you look up to on this platform. Social Media isn’t about getting, it’s about giving. If you want an example check my blog post about ‘The Most Inspiring Female Travel Blogs”.
Cause even that I didn’t ask for it, almost every single person in that list gave my post a shoutout in their story. That day I got more page views than I had ever had before! - Write about something that will trigger an emotion. For instance my blog post on “Why Influencers need to stop promoting unethical elephant sanctuaries” got shared a bunch of times. Important note, write about things that actually matter to you, otherwise it will come across as pushy and fake.
