Another reason why it’s a good idea to hire a driver when visiting Rajasthan, India. Besides the Taj Mahal there actually isn’t that much to see in Agra, India. That’s why it makes more sense to stay in Delhi which is only 3,5 hours driving away from Agra.
The grounds are open everyday from 6am until 7pm, except for Friday the complex is only open for prayers between 12pm and 2pm.
When to visit
If you want to beat the crowds make sure to be there at 6am. If you are travelling by car from Delhi this means you will have to leave your hotel around 2am. Most of the people want to take photos of the Taj Mahal at the main entrance. But there is actually a way better spot to catch the Taj Mahal in all it’s sunrise glory if you head over to the West Gate. Also way less people visit this area so you’ll be able to take those iconic photos without a million other tourists in them!
What’s the price?
As a foreign tourist you’ll pay 1000 IDR which includes shoe covers, a water bottle and a tourist map of Agra.
What can you take with you?
You can only take small bags with you so don’t carry a big backpack cause you will have to leave it at the entrance. You are allowed to take in your wallet, cellphone, a camera and one water bottle. Food also isn’t allowed inside and neither is tobacco and lighters. Make sure you don’t have any electronic devices on you besides your phone, so no Ipad, earphones or chargers. My guess is that an external battery also isn’t allowed inside.
Best places for photos
- West gate during sunrise
- East gate during sunset (this might all sound logical but believe me a lot of people tend to do it the other way around)
- Go out by walking through the East gate and walk towards the river. You’ll find a few fishermen there that own a little row boat to take you out onto the river for a few minutes.
How much time do you need
We spend around 2 hours to cover the entire area and take all of our photos.
