Tucked away at the very tip of Croatia’s Istrian Peninsula lies a rugged little slice of paradise that totally stole my heart—Kamenjak National Park. Think dramatic cliffs, turquoise coves, wildflowers swaying in the sea breeze, and secret swimming spots that feel like they’re straight out of a dream. If you’re craving nature, adventure, and a little bit of that “off-the-beaten-path” magic, this guide is for you!
I know firsthand how overwhelming planning a trip can be, especially when there’s limited info out there—so I’ve pulled together my personal tips, local insights, and all the practical details you’ll need.
Whether you’re visiting Kamenjak as a day trip from Rovinj or adding it to a bigger Croatia itinerary, consider this your ultimate guide to one of Istria’s best-kept secrets.

Why visit Kamenjak National Park
If you’re dreaming of wild, unspoiled nature and crystal-clear water without the usual crowds, Kamenjak is your kind of place. It’s one of those hidden gems that still feels a bit like a local secret—even though it’s only a short drive from Pula. The landscape here is raw and rugged in the best way possible: jagged limestone cliffs tumble into the sea, dirt paths wind through pine forests, and tiny coves appear like magic around every corner.

But what really sets Kamenjak National Park apart is its vibe. It’s not polished or overly touristy—it’s real, wild, and full of character. You can cycle the trails, cliff-jump into turquoise waters, or just laze the day away on a flat rock by the sea with a picnic and a book. It’s perfect for adventurous souls and laid-back beach lovers alike.
I fell in love with how peaceful and untouched it felt compared to some of Croatia’s busier coastal spots. And if you’re into wildlife or botany, you’ll be happy to know that Kamenjak is home to some incredible biodiversity, including over 600 plant species and even some protected orchids—which makes it a hotspot for nature lovers, too.

Best time to visit Kamenjak National Park
If I had to pick one month to explore Kamenjak, May would be it. There’s something really special about this time of year—the whole park feels like it’s waking up from winter and bursting into color. The wildflowers are everywhere, the air smells like pine and sea salt, and the trails are blissfully quiet.
The weather is just right—sunny and warm enough for swimming if you don’t mind a bit of a refreshing dip (the sea is usually around 18–20°C), and perfect for cycling or hiking without melting in the midday sun. You’ll likely have whole coves to yourself, which honestly makes the experience feel so much more magical and intimate.

Plus, visiting in May means you’ll beat the summer crowds and high-season prices. There’s no traffic jam at the entrance, no struggle to find a shady picnic spot, and you can soak in the peaceful vibe that makes Kamenjak so special before it gets busy in July and August.
I visited in late May and loved how it felt like I had the whole peninsula to myself. I spent hours hopping between secluded bays, sunbathing on flat rocks with a book, and sipping coffee at the cliff bar with only the sound of waves and seagulls in the background. Honestly? Pure bliss.

How to Get to Cape Kamenjak
By Car (Most Flexible & Fastest)
Driving from Pula to Premantura/Kamenjak typically takes 20–30 minutes (around 10‑15 km) down charming Istrian roads. Once in Premantura, follow the signs—prepare for gravel roads and a speed‑low adventure vibe as you near the park entrance.
💡 TIP – During summer a €10 – €15/day fee is charged per car (May–June & September–October rates apply). You can actually buy your entrance pass in advance online. I highly recommend doing so, especially during high season since the amount of people allowed to enter Kamenjak National Park is limited.
Parking spots near beaches and cliff areas fill up fast, so arriving early can save you from traffic jams at peak times!
Which Entrance Should You Use?
Kamenjak has two main entrances, and the one you choose depends on whether you’ve pre-booked your ticket:
1. Rupine Entrance (for prepaid tickets)
- Use this one if you bought your entrance pass online (you’ll enter the license plate during purchase).
- This gate checks your pass automatically—just drive through!
- It’s the more direct route, so great for hassle-free entry, and avoids parking congestion in Premantura.
2. Parendine Entrance (for on-the-spot tickets)
- Heading here? It’s the place to buy your ticket at the entrance if you didn’t prepay.
- You can pay by card or cash (subject to machine availability), and then enter.
- Handy if you prefer flexibility, but note that cars are limited—it can get busy mid-morning in summer

By Bus + Walk or Bike
For a more relaxed, eco-friendly trip, hop on Bus #28 (sometimes #26) from Pula Bus Station to Premantura—a short ride of about 30 minutes.
Once you arrive, you’ve got options:
- Walk – A few kilometers of pleasant countryside strolling—just be ready for the summer heat if it’s hot.
- Bike – Rent a bike either in Pula or Premantura and ride the scenic, low-traffic paths to the park—ideal for soaking in the pine-and-sea atmosphere
By Tour
If you’d rather skip the logistics, a full-day boat tour from Medulin is a dreamy way to arrive—cruise into caves, hop between tiny islets, and glide into secluded bays. Pickup is usually included (shuttle to Medulin port), so you just show up, relax, and let someone else handle the route.
Top Things To Do in Kamenjak National Park
1. Discover Hidden Beaches & Coves
Let’s be real: the beaches here aren’t your typical long sandy strips. Instead, you’ll find a mix of pebbled shores, rocky ledges, and tucked-away bays with the clearest turquoise water. Honestly, perfect if you have a toddler with you who loves throwing rocks!

Our favorite beaches in Cape Kamenjak
- Beach Radovica – a very secluded bay that you can only reach on foot and requires a little scrambling to reach.
- Pinižule Bay – a local fave with calm, shallow water. There’s also a small bar here where you can grab something to drink/eat and they do accept payment bar card.
💡 TIP – Pack water shoes—the rocks are gorgeous, but not foot-friendly!

2. Rent a Bike & Cycle the Coastal Trails
The dirt trails that loop around the peninsula are ideal for cycling—flat, scenic, and totally manageable even for casual riders. You’ll get stunning sea views, pine-scented air, and that glorious feeling of freedom.
There are bike rentals in both Pula and Premantura, and you can ride all the way into the park.

3. Go Cliff Jumping at Cape Kamenjak
Yes, you read that right. Near Kolumbarice cliffs, you’ll find natural platforms perfect for diving into the deep blue sea. It’s adrenaline-fueled, completely optional, and ridiculously fun to watch—even if you stay dry.
During our visit to Cape Kamenjak the sea was actually very wild and it would have been incredibly dangerous to go cliff jumping!

4. Hike the Coastal Paths
Not into biking? You can hike too! There are plenty of unmarked but easy-to-follow trails winding through pine forests and along the cliffs.
Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and your camera—sunsets here are unreal.

5. Spot Wildlife & Wildflowers
Kamenjak is a protected nature park, home to dolphins (yes, really!), Mediterranean monk seals (rare but possible!), and over 600 plant species, including several types of orchids in spring. If you love nature photography, you’ll be in heaven.

6. Have lunch at Safari Bar
Swing by the iconic Safari Bar, a quirky jungle-style café tucked into the cliffs, serving cold drinks, local bites and killer views.
There are actually a ton of fun stuff for kids to play with here like a self-made slide, several swings etc. Unfortunately nothing for a 1.5 year old but he had still fun exploring this unique bar.
💡 TIP – They only accept cash at Safari Bar but there’s an ATM inside, which is honestly a genius business move.

Where to stay in Istria
Base yourself in a central location like Rovinj, Motovun, or Bale—that way you’re never more than an hour from the coast, the hilltop towns, or even Pula (if you must). If you love coastal vibes, go for Rovinj. If you want countryside charm, Motovun or Grožnjan are magical.
We stayed in Rovinj and absolutely loved our time here! We rented an apartment right outside of the Old Town so we could still park our car in front. But from there to the heart of Rovinj it was an easy 10 minute walk. We stayed at Apartments Cvek, which was perfect for a family of 3.
Other hotel options in Rovinj are:
- Hotel Adriatic – Located in the heart of Rovinj’s Old Town, Hotel Adriatic is a design lover’s dream. This art-forward boutique hotel features contemporary interiors adorned with curated artworks, offering a unique blend of modern design and historical charm.
- Hotel Lone – Set within the Golden Cape Forest Park, Hotel Lone stands out with its Y-shaped modernist architecture and minimalist interiors. Designed by Croatian studio 3LHD, the hotel incorporates natural materials like wood and stone, creating a harmonious connection with its surroundings.
- The Melegran – Tucked away in one of Rovinj’s narrow Old Town lanes, The Melegran is a quirky boutique hotel that combines historic charm with contemporary flair. Its interiors feature bold colors, vintage-style furnishings, and unique design elements like neon lights and artistic wallpapers.

💡 TIP – There’s no direct public transport to Kamenjak from Rovinj, so self-driving (or renting a car) is easiest. Driving time is around 35 to 45 minutes and on your way over make sure to stop at Bale, and explore this gorgeous and lesser known town in Istria!
