So grab your sandals, charge your camera, and get ready to fall in love with one of Croatia’s most enchanting coastal towns. Let’s dive into the ultimate guide to visiting Trogir!

Why You Should Visit Trogir
Okay, so here’s the thing—Trogir totally surprised me. I hadn’t even planned to stop here at first. It was meant to be a quick detour between Split and Plitvice Lakes… but the moment I stepped through that ancient stone gate and wandered into the maze of narrow alleys, I knew I had stumbled onto something special.
Trogir isn’t flashy. It doesn’t try too hard. But that’s exactly why it’s so charming. The whole Old Town is basically a living museum, filled with Romanesque churches, Venetian palaces, and dreamy courtyards that make you want to sit down and just stay a while.
What I love most is that Trogir has this beautifully slow pace. Unlike Dubrovnik or even Split, you’re not battling crowds every step of the way. It’s the kind of place where you can wander aimlessly, chat with locals, stumble upon hidden restaurants, and feel like you’re part of a story from centuries ago.

Where is Trogir and How to Get There
It’s nestled along Croatia’s stunning Dalmatian Coast, just 30 minutes from Split, and literally five minutes from the airport. Yup, if you’re flying into Split, you’re practically already there!
I visited Trogir after a few days exploring Split and found the short drive an absolute breeze. You can get there by rental car (what we did), or hop on a local bus or boat if you’re feeling adventurous. There’s even a regular boat line during the summer months that sails between Split and Trogir—it takes a bit longer, but it’s such a lovely way to start your trip with those sea views.
🚗 Rent a car in Croatia by using SunnyCars. There’s never any hidden costs with them and free cancellation up to 1 hour before rental start. Their price is transparent and everything is included.
🚗 By car – It’s about 25 km from Split and takes roughly 30–40 minutes depending on traffic. Just be warned: parking inside the Old Town is tricky (and pricey), so I parked just across the bridge and walked in.
🚌 By bus – There are frequent buses from Split’s main station. It’s cheap and easy, especially if you don’t want to deal with parking.
Whichever way you go, Trogir is super accessible—and because it’s so compact, you won’t need a car once you’re there. Just pack your comfiest sandals and let the cobblestone streets lead the way.

Best Time to Visit Trogir
Let me just say—Trogir is pretty gorgeous all year round. But if you want that perfect blend of sunshine, manageable crowds, and dreamy photo lighting? Timing is everything.
I’ve visited the Dalmatian Coast in different seasons, and here’s the honest truth: spring and early fall are the sweet spots. Think April to early June or late September into October. The weather is warm enough for dresses and sunset strolls, but you won’t be elbowing your way through tour groups in the tiny alleyways.

Top Things to Do in Trogir
Trogir might be small, but it’s packed with charm and character. We spent half a day exploring the town on foot, and honestly? I didn’t want to leave. Every little street has a story, and it’s one of those places where even getting lost is part of the magic.
Here are the top things you absolutely shouldn’t miss when visiting:
1. Wander the Old Town (and get lost on purpose)
Trogir’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the second you step inside, you’ll understand why. Picture narrow, winding alleys, laundry fluttering from stone windows, and hidden courtyards that feel like they belong in a movie set.
There’s no specific “route” I’d recommend—just let your curiosity lead you. I found the prettiest little photo spots when I ditched Google Maps and followed the sound of church bells or the smell of fresh bread. Trust me, it’s worth slowing down here.

2. Climb the Bell Tower of St. Lawrence Cathedral
If you only do one “touristy” thing, make it this. The cathedral itself is beautiful, with stunning Romanesque architecture—but the real gem is the bell tower. The climb is a bit tight and not for the faint of heart (those staircases are narrow), but once you reach the top? Oh wow… panoramic views of terracotta rooftops, the glittering Adriatic, and nearby islands.
💡 TIP – You buy your ticket at the museum across the square.

3. Stroll Along the Riva Promenade
This is the place to people-watch, especially at sunset. Locals gather here in the evenings, tourists sip cocktails under palm trees, and the yachts glimmer in the harbor. We grabbed lunch here at one of the many restaurants and enjoyed the fresh sea breeze.

4. Visit Knežev dvor – The Duke’s Palace
Tucked right in the heart of Trogir’s Old Town, Knežev dvor—also known as The Duke’s Palace—is one of those places you might walk past without realizing how much history lives behind its stone façade. But if you slow down and take a moment to explore, you’ll find one of the town’s most fascinating corners.
The palace dates all the way back to the 13th century, and it once served as the seat of local government during the Venetian rule. It’s got that classic Dalmatian-Gothic vibe: think arched windows, a charming loggia, and beautifully aged stone that’s seen centuries of change.
💡 TIP – There’s no entrance fee to visit.

5. Take a day trip to Krka National Park
If you’re craving a little nature escape during your coastal Croatia adventure, then a day trip to Krka National Park is an absolute must. It’s only about an hour and fifteen minutes from Trogir, and trust me—the waterfalls are just as dreamy as they look in the photos.
You’ll find crystal-clear waterfalls tumbling through lush green forests, wooden boardwalks that wind over emerald-colored pools, and quiet corners where you can just sit and listen to the sound of rushing water. It honestly felt like stepping into a fairytale—especially if you get there early before the tour buses roll in.

6. Day Trip to Primošten – For the Beach, Not the Town
If you’re looking for a relaxing beach day during your stay in Trogir, Primošten is 100% worth the detour. It’s just under an hour’s drive up the coast, and while the town itself didn’t totally blow me away, the beach? Absolute stunner.
Let’s be real—Primošten’s old town is cute enough, but if you’ve already wandered through Trogir, Split, or Šibenik, it might feel a little… underwhelming. There’s not a ton going on aside from a few restaurants and souvenir shops, and I didn’t find it particularly memorable. But that’s okay—because the real star here is the coastline.

The main beach, Velika Raduča, is a dreamy stretch of white pebbles with crystal-clear turquoise water that looks like it’s straight out of a travel brochure. It’s perfect for a lazy afternoon of sunbathing, swimming, or just floating around like a human jellyfish. And the best part? The views. You’ve got the Adriatic on one side and a perfect little peninsula on the other—ideal for those classic Croatian beach photos.
💡 TIP – Grab a delicious ice cream from Noemie Bar & Kitchen

Where to Stay in Trogir
Trogir may be small, but when it comes to places to stay, you’ve got some pretty great options—especially if you know where to look. Whether you want to wake up in a centuries-old stone house or stay somewhere modern just steps from the sea, there’s something for every vibe and budget.
Recommended stays
- Hotel Brown Beach House (technically just outside the Old Town but stunning, with a pool and sea views)
- Villa Carrara – Right in the center, super cozy, and tucked away just enough to feel quiet

How Much Time Do You Need in Trogir?
Here’s the truth: Trogir is small—you can walk from one end of the Old Town to the other in under 10 minutes. But that doesn’t mean you should just breeze through it and tick it off your list. Because while it’s technically doable in a few hours, the real magic of Trogir shows up when you slow down and stay a little longer.
If you’re short on time: half a day works.
If you want to really enjoy it: one full day is perfect.
And if you’re craving slow, atmospheric travel? Stay overnight—you won’t regret it.
And honestly? If I could do it all over again, I’d choose to stay in Trogir instead of Split.
Don’t get me wrong—Split has its perks, but it felt way more hectic and crowded. Trogir, on the other hand, had that perfect balance of charm and calm. You still get the gorgeous views, amazing food, and access to all the day trips… but without the tourist overload.
