When travelling through Rajasthan one city that you definitely must visit is Udaipur “the City of Lakes”, also known as the Venice from India. The air is cooler here compared to the rest of Rajasthan and there is an all round relaxed vibe in the city.

In the middle of all its beauty you’ll find Lake Pichola. All day long you’re able to go on a little boat ride that takes you alongside the City Palace and the number 1 place to stay when you’re in Udaipur: Taj Lake Palace.

Taj Lake Palace Udaipur – An Honest Review

Taj Lake Palace is a luxury hotel in the middle of Lake Pichola and holds 83 rooms and suites covered in white marble walls. It’s formerly known as Jan Niwas and was built by Maharana Jangat Singh II between 1743 and 1746. It’s walls of black and white marble are all lined with semi-precious stones and the entire palace is full with columns, pillared terraces, gardens and fountains.

In 1971, Taj Hotels Resorts & Palaces took over management and turned it into the marvellous hotel it is today. They restored it to its full glory and it even became world famous after it was featured in the James Bond movie “Octopussy”.

It’s the only hotel in Udaipur that is located on the lake and therefore gives you the best views over the City Palace, Jag Mandir and the hills.  

Guests are welcomed at the bank of Udaipur at the Taj Lake Palace jetty and are treated to the most warming welcome. A private boat then transports you to one of the most majestic hotels you have ever seen. As soon as you arrive they will make you feel right at home and a platter of refreshments is already waiting for you.  

There are 66 luxurious rooms and 17 grand suites that all come with the most gorgeous views of the lake.

In the middle of the hotel you’ll find a beautiful lilly pond where guests are able to have breakfast or enjoy a cocktail.

At the back of the hotel you’ll find the spa facilities and the swimming pool. This used to be the Queen’s private swimming pool that is now open to guests of the Taj Lake Palace.

And if all of this wasn’t enough, you can also get yourself pampered at their unique floating spa: the Jiva Spa boat, offering an experience not the be missed.

The Taj Lake Palace is not open to the public and only guests can enjoy dinner here. During high season the hotel is almost always fully booked and the prices are steep but if you would visit during low season (yes it can get bloody hot, but who cares when you’re staying here?) the prices are way lower and you can enjoy the facilities almost all to yourself.
