Are you looking for the top things to do in and around Berchtesgaden? Then no worries! I visited this area myself last year and will share everything that I know with you!
Berchtesgaden is a beautiful area in the Southeast of Germany and is a part of Bavaria. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a weekend away and return home relaxed and with some fresh alpine air in your lungs. Typically the best time to visit this area is from end of April until mid September, with July and August being the busiest months. I visited at the end of August, when days are long with the sun rising around 6am and only setting at 9.30pm. Average temperatures of 26°C to 30°C make it the perfect weather to go for a hike in the morning and relax by the pool in the afternoon.

Where to stay in Berchtesgaden
While exploring the area around Berchtesgaden I chose to stay at Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden, a luxurious 5-star hotel located high up in the mountains. From here I ventured to Königsee, Hintersee, Maria Gern and the Panorama Strasse.

What to do in Berchtesgaden
As said before I started this little road trip from Berchtesgaden, a beautiful area in the Bavarian Alps. Make sure to spend at least 3 days here before driving into Austria! You can find the vignette that you need for the highway in Austria at a local gas station. I opted for a 10 day one which was €9.
Berchtesgaden Highlights
- Go on a boat trip around KÖNIGSEE
- Hike to FISHUNKELALM around Obersee
- Visit Maria Gern
- Hike around Hintersee – Start your hike at the Hintersee Parking
- Drive up the Rossfeld Panoramastrasse to watch the sunrise – Ticket price is €8 to go up and drive to the top
A Day Trip from Berchtesgaden to Hallstatt
The picturesque town of Hallstatt is located near Gosausee and the perfect day trip from Berchtesgaden (2,5 hours driving). Upon entering you’ll drive through one of the coolest tunnels in Austria where you’ll literally see the inside of a mountain. Plan your visit either early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the big groups of day trippers. You can park your car at one of the 4 designated parking lots surrounding the town.
Hallstatt Highlights
- Walk up to the main viewpoint to watch the sun set over the mountains
- Go for a boat ride on the Hallstätter See
- Visit the Old Town of Hallstatt and the Market Square
- Take the cable car up to the Skywalk for a panoramic view
- Visit Dachstein Salzkammergut, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
A Day Trip from Berchtesgaden to Loser Alm
The area around Loser Alm is perfect to enjoy outdoors activities such as hiking, paragliding, cycling and much more. My main reason to visit this particular place was because of a certain photo I found on Instagram. A beautiful viewpoint overlooking the valley.
You can find the exact location for this spot here.
A Day Trip from Berchtesgaden to Stausee Mooserboden
This day excursion can be best combined with a visit to Zell Am See, which is only 20 minutes driving away.
As the name already mentions Stausee Mooserboden is a high mountain reservoir which you can visit. Upon arrival you’ll have to leave your car at the main parking lot and walk towards the visitor center (all the way up the parking lot and across the bridge). Here you can pay for your ticket (€25) to visit the reservoir.
Don’t expect to arrive within 10 minutes though! You’ll first go with a shuttle bus more up the mountain. Then with a lift you’ll be transported all the way to the top where another shuttle bus will be waiting to take you to the drop off point.
