3 Days in Berchtesgaden – The only Berchtesgaden Itinerary you’ll need
Day 1 – Start your 3 days Berchtesgaden itinerary by hiking up the Watzmann
Berchtesgaden is literally surrounded by the most insane mountain range and one of the most impressive mountains is the Watzmann! There are several hiking options here but the one that offers the most stunning views is the hike up to Watzmann Hocheck. It’s not an easy hike so come prepared with enough water and some snacks and please wear proper hiking shoes! I could even recommend hiking poles towards the end of this hike!
Total duration of the hike – 10 hours
The hike starts at the Hammerstielstraße 50 Parking and the first part is a steady incline through the woods. It’s only halfway through the hike that things start to heat up a little with more inclinations and a lot of switchbacks. While hiking up you’ll probably encounter people carrying a helmet but not to worry you don’t need any professional equipment for this hike. They are crossing from one mountain top to another.

The first stop will be the Watzmann house where you can enjoy some refreshments and food before you start the second leg of this hike. To reach the top Hocheck you’ll have to climb up another 2,5 hours!
After getting back down to the parking lot it is time to have a nice and quiet evening at your hotel! I stayed at the Berghotel Rehlegg and can absolutely recommend it! They have a beautiful outdoor area where you can relax by the pool or in one of the many relax chairs while overlooking the mountains.
Day 2 – Emerald lakes and Fairytale forests
The second day of this 3 days Berchtesgaden itinerary is a little bit more relaxed but might be even more beautiful! First up is a visit to Hintersee, one of the most beautiful lakes in the area! During the day it can become pretty crowded here so best to start your day here when it’s still nice and quiet. There is a huge parking area here and a bus stop as well if you prefer taking public transport!
When you’re here make sure to also walk to the Zauberwald, it’s a super easy hike but absolutely stunning!
For lunch or a drink make a stop at the Wirtshaus im Zauberwald to try some of the local delicacies!
Next up is a visit to the beautiful Maria Gern! This cute church offers the most amazing view over the valley and you’ll see the Watzmann on the background. When I saw it I still couldn’t believe I hiked up that mountain :p.
The meadow I am standing is actually private property which I didn’t know at the time. When we arrived the owner pointed this out and I asked him nicely if I could have 5 minutes to take some photos which he agreed to.
Another beautiful and easy hike from here is to Marxenhöhe. There actually used to be a swing here but it got removed in 2019 cause the tree broke down due to too much snowfall. But the view from here remains impressive nevertheless!
After a day full of fun why not indulge yourself in a fancy dinner? You can call up the Kempinski Hotel and ask for a reservation. You can have dinner on their terrace while overlooking entire Berchtesgaden and Ramsau. Oh and this is also where you’ll find one of my favourite swings ever!
Day 3 – Epic Viewpoints and Boat Rides
It’s the last day of this amazing 3 day Berchtesgaden itinerary and I am not exaggerating when I say we saved the best for last! Now do yourself a favour and get out of bed before sunrise to head down to the Königssee! Cause before we get on one of the boats it’s time to hike up to an amazing viewpoint and admire the sunrise of this majestic lake!
To get to this viewpoint you have to go left at the start of Königssee and walk behind the boat storages. First follow the sign that says Malerwinkel and afterwards simply follow the signs that say Rabenwand.

Now it’s time to head back down to the boat docks and buy a two way ticket to Salet. You can also buy your tickets online so you don’t have to wait in line here.

Now, if you have a little more time on your hands I can recommend you to drive up the beautiful Rossfeld Panoramastrasse. It’s €8 to drive on this road but it’s totally worth it due to the more than epic views you’ll see at the top!
By now you should have a good idea on how to spend 3 amazing days in Berchtesgaden! Berchtesgaden is such a beautiful area that I can guarantee you you’ll never want leave. If you have a little more time than 3 days you can also go on a few fun day trips!
