The Best Christmas Markets in Düsseldorf

Ready to explore the best Christmas Markets in Düsseldorf with me? Last year I had the opportunity to visit the beautiful Düsseldorf and during Christmas time it transforms into a charming city, filled with twinkling lights, beautiful ornaments and of course, tons of mulled wine.

Even that Düsseldorf is a pretty big city, you can cover all of the seven Christmas Markets on foot. All of them are located in the city center, near the Altstadt area.

When does the Christmas Market start in Düsseldorf?

In 2019 they will start on the 21st of November and end on the 30th of December.

Sunday – Thursday : 11am – 8pm
Friday – Saturday: 11am – 9pm

Now, let’s get to the good stuff! Which are the best Christmas Markets to visit in Düsseldorf? As I previously mentioned there are 7 different Christmas Markets in the city center of Düsseldorf. In this article I will guide you through my favourites and also a “secret” one that no one tells you about! So get ready to eat and drink your way through all of them!

1. The Little Angels Market (The Engelchen-Markt)

This cute little market is proof that you can never have something as too much gold or white angels as decoration. Make sure not to miss this beautiful Christmas Market and make sure to check out one of the most beautiful Christmas Decoration stalls! In the middle you’ll find a beautiful pavilion echoing Christmas music to match this picture perfect setting.

2. The Handwerker Market

This was one of my personal favourites when visiting the Christmas markets in Düsseldorf. Imagine this: red wooden houses, fairy lights dangling from them, the smell of freshly baked cookies, a carousel echoing children’s laughter and a big Christmas tree in the center with the city town hall as it’s background.

Make sure to grab some mulled wine while exploring all of the different Christmas stalls! Usually they will ask you for a deposit in cash for the mug so don’t forget to return it.

3. The “Secret” One at Burgplatz

This isn’t the biggest one but the Christmas stalls here were by far my favourite when it comes to decoration. It’s not included in the 7 markets list because people refer to it as the place where you can find the giant ferris wheel. But, it’s definitely also worth a visit to just wander around.

4. Altstadt Market

When walking between the Marktplatz and Heinrich-Heine-Platz you’ll come across rows and rows of diverse Christmas stalls. Grab some gingerbread cookies and since you only live once, have another mulled wine!

What to know before visiting the Christmas Markets in Düsseldorf

The Christmas Markets are closed on the 24th of November and the 25th of December.

A lot of websites will simply state that the markets are open daily but this is not the case on 2 exceptions. On the ‘Sunday of the Dead’ and on Christmas Day all of the stalls will be closed.

During the evening they are way prettier

From sunset all of the twinkling lights will go on and strolling around becomes that much more magical!
