The Most Instagrammable places in South Iceland

1. Thingvellir Park

• How to get there – Park at Öxarárfoss and start your walk from here. You’ll walk through the tectonic plates and end up at the Óxarárfoss waterfall. From here you can walk further into the park and go see the Silfra fissure.

• When to go – Thingvellir Park is located on the Golden Circle route so try to go early to avoid the tourists.

2. Seljalandsfoss

• How to get there – Follow the ringroad (route 1) towards the South of Iceland. Seljalandsfoss will be visible while you’re driving so you just need to make a left to get closer to it.

• When to go – Try to go as early as possible cause this place get’s very crowded!

• Tip: Make sure to wear a raincoat here cause you’ll get very close to the waterfall and otherwise end up soaking wet!

3. Skógafoss

• How to get there – Skógafoss is a little bit further driving than Seljalandsfoss and also right of the ringroad.

• When to go – Early morning to avoid the crowds!

4. Kvernufoss

• How to get there – Kvernufoss is tucked away from the main road butvery easy to reach. Park at the Skogar Museum and from there walk towards the canyon on your right. You’ll come across a fence but the owners have put a ladder there so you can easily get over it.

• When to go – This place is relatively unknown. If you’re there after visiting Skogafoss you’ll still have the place almost all to yourself.

5. Dyrhólaey

• How to get there – The parking is right next to the lighthouse. The road up is pretty steep but I went up with the Happy Camper van and he did it like a champ!

• When to go – Watch the sunrise from this beautiful viewpoint!

6. Vík

• How to get there – The black beach is only 30 minute ride away from the previous viewpoint! There is a big parking lot right next to the beach!

• When to go – This beach was one of the busiest places in Iceland so make sure to be there early!

7. Fjadrárgljúfur

• How to get there – It’s a little hike up from the parking lot, make sure to put on cramp-ons if there is snow!

• When to go – This place is not on the ring road and therefore way less crowded!

8. Diamond Beach

• How to get there – When driving to Glacier Lagoon you take a right before you cross the bridge. Here you’ll find a parking lot to go to Diamond Beach.

• When to go – In contrary to the Glacier Lagoon (all the tour leave from this place), there are way less people here!

9. Lake Myvátn

• How to get there – The lake is located in the northern part of Iceland and a must-see if you are travelling the ring road around the country! The lake is located right next to the little town of Reykjahlíð.

• When to go – We walked around the lake in the middle of the day and were the only ones there!

10. Godafoss

• How to get there – One of the most powerfull waterfalls out there! Godafoss is only 30 minutes driving from Lake Myvátn and the parking lot is only 10 minutes away from the waterfall! On the left side there are stairs that lead to a pathway next to the waterfall!

• When to go – It can get pretty crowded here but people were respectful and everyone was able to get their photo.

11. Kolugljùfur Canyon

• How to get there – This canyon is located on your way to the East part of Iceland, about 40 minutes away from the ring road but totally worth the detour! Because of it’s location almost no other tourists know about this place and you’re able to explore it all on your own!

• When to go – Go right at sunrise to watch the sun go up behind the waterfall!

12. Budakirkja

• How to get there – This famous black church is located on the Snæfelsness Peninsula.

• When to go – The Snæfelsness Peninsula is a lot closer to Reykjavik and therefore way more touristic than the Northern part of the country! So try to go before the crowds arrive!

13. Kirkjufell

• How to get there – Follow the main road around the Peninsula and in the North you’ll find this mystical mountain with it’s waterfall. The parking lot is pretty small.

• When to go – This spot is so touristic so make sure to get there as early as possible! Sunset will be crowded for sure so try to be there right at the break of dawn.

14. Ingjaldshóllkirkja

• How to get there – This church is right of the main road. Double check your Google Maps when driving towards it cause we ended on a very bumpy and tiny land road while there was just a normal and easy road heading there…

• When to go – This spot isn’t as touristic as the black church so you can go visit it whenever suits you.

15. Blue Lagoon

• How to get there – It’s a 44 minute drive from Reykjavik and the perfect way to end your trip through Iceland!

• When to go – Try to go as soon as they open! These hours may vary depending on which season you are visiting. But during winter you should definitely be there as soon as they open!
