Gellert Hill
You want to find the best view over the marvellous city of Budapest? Look no further! Getting there you have two options: the easy way or the hard way. The first times we visited this spot we always chose the last option. It’s a pretty steep climb up that you can start either from the Liberty Bridge across from the world famous Danubius Gellert Hotel or in front of the Sissi Bridge. Both pathways will take you through a park and the cutest cobblestone paths imaginable. If you choose to do the climb take a bottle of water with you cause you will be parched once you’ve reached the top. They do sell drinks on top of the hill but these are way overpriced compared to the rest of the shops in Budapest. For instance, a glass of mulled whine costs 4x as much here than in the city center! For the most spectacular views start your walk before sunrise or sunset so you can see Budapest in all it’s sunlight shimmering glory.
Not really into walking and in possession of a car? There is a car park right at the top of the Citadella or park in one of the little side streets that lead up to it for a more budget friendlier option.
Chain Bridge and Buda Castle
On the photo above you can already spot the beautiful Chain Bridge and the Buda castle in the background. To get there from this point is rather easy. Just follow the pathway down until you end up at the Sissi Bridge. From there it will take you around 10 to 15 minutes to reach this beautiful location. On your way over there you can already take some wonderful photos with the bridge as your backdrop. I honestly prefer it this way since the Chain Bridge is always super busy. This one is also closed off from the sides so you can’t just go running in the middle and strike a pose. If you are determined for a photo like this google the dates that this bridge is traffic free. Since in 2018 they are planning to start construction in this area I wouldn’t wait too long. This will either result in no traffic and very cool photo opportunities or a bridge surrounded by construction work which is not that nice…
The best view of this bridge is not on top of the funicular where it’s always swarmed with tourists but located a little lower on a platform that is easily to reach on foot. A friend of ours showed us this hidden gem and took some of my favourite photos there. If you are looking for the perfect place for a couple shot, look no further. Ready to do some more climbing? Take the cobblestones up to the Buda Castle and wander around this gorgeous piece of architecture.
