If there’s one place in Bosnia & Herzegovina that completely took us by surprise, it’s Jajce.
Nestled between rolling green hills and surrounded by rivers, lakes, and waterfalls, this charming medieval town looks like something straight out of a fairytale. One moment you’re wandering through centuries-old stone streets, the next you’re standing in front of a spectacular waterfall crashing right into the heart of the town. And trust me, that’s only the beginning.
While destinations like Mostar and Sarajevo often steal the spotlight, Jajce remains one of Bosnia & Herzegovina’s best-kept secrets. Yet it offers everything that makes this country so special: rich history, breathtaking nature, fascinating cultural heritage, and plenty of hidden corners waiting to be explored.
We recently spent a couple of days exploring Jajce and quickly fell in love with its laid-back atmosphere and incredible scenery. From ancient fortresses and historic catacombs to crystal-clear lakes and some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Balkans, there’s far more to do here than most travelers realize.
In this guide, I’ll share all of the top things to do in Jajce, including the must-see highlights, hidden gems, practical tips, and a few places that completely stole our hearts along the way.

Quick Tips for Jajce
- Where to stay – Cottages Relax is the perfect base for exploring the area of Jajce and Pliva Lake, without a big price ticket being attached to it. The location is absolutely perfect and the view from the chalet is a million dollar one!
- Must visit places – Jajce Waterfall, Pliva Lake, Mlinčići

How to reach Jajce
Located in the heart of the country, it sits almost perfectly between Sarajevo and Banja Luka, making it an excellent stop on any Bosnia & Herzegovina road trip.
By Car – The Best Option
The easiest and most flexible way to visit Jajce is by car. This is exactly what we did, and honestly, I can’t recommend it enough. The drive itself is part of the experience, taking you through rolling hills, traditional villages, and some of Bosnia’s most beautiful landscapes.
🚗 Rent a car by using SunnyCars. There’s never any hidden costs with them and free cancellation up to 1 hour before rental start. Their price is transparent and everything is included.
Driving times
- Sarajevo to Jajce – around 2.5 hours (135 km)
- Mostar to Jajce – around 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic and stops
If you’re planning a Bosnia & Herzegovina itinerary, I highly recommend combining Jajce with destinations such as Sarajevo, Mostar, Travnik, or the Una region.

By Bus
Jajce is also well connected by bus. Direct buses run daily from Sarajevo and Banja Luka, making it possible to visit even if you’re not renting a car.
- Sarajevo to Jajce – approximately 3.5 hours by bus
- Banja Luka to Jajce – approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes by bus
While public transport works well for reaching the town itself, having a car will make it much easier to explore nearby attractions such as Pliva Lakes and the famous watermills.
By Guided Tour
If you’re staying in Sarajevo and short on time, you can also visit Jajce as part of an organised day trip. Many tours combine Jajce with nearby Travnik, Pliva Lake, and the historic watermills, making it an easy way to explore Central Bosnia without worrying about transport.

Best time to visit Jajce
If you want to experience this charming Bosnian town at its absolute best, I recommend visiting during late spring, summer, or early autumn.
For us June was the absolute sweet spot. During these months, temperatures are pleasant, the surrounding countryside is beautifully green, and the famous Jajce Waterfall is often at its most impressive thanks to seasonal rainfall. It’s also the perfect time for exploring the nearby Pliva Lakes, wandering through the medieval old town, and enjoying long evenings at one of the local restaurants.
During the Summer months the Pliva Lakes become a popular spot for swimming, kayaking, and relaxing by the shore. Keep in mind that July and August are also the busiest months, although Jajce never feels nearly as crowded as destinations like Mostar.

Cottages Relax

Best things to do in Jajce
1. Visit the Jajce waterfall
If there’s one landmark you absolutely can’t miss in Jajce, it’s the spectacular Jajce Waterfall. What makes this waterfall so unique is its location right in the heart of town, where the Pliva River dramatically plunges around 20 meters into the Vrbas River below. It’s one of the very few waterfalls in the world located within a historic city center, making it the true symbol of Jajce.
The best views can be enjoyed from the official viewpoint at the base of the waterfall, where you’ll really feel the power of the cascading water.
We visited early in the morning and loved how peaceful it felt before the day-trippers arrived. The combination of rushing water, ancient stone buildings, and lush green surroundings makes this one of the most photogenic places in all of Bosnia & Herzegovina.

2. Visit the Jajce Fortress
Towering high above the town, the Jajce Fortress is one of the most iconic landmarks in Bosnia & Herzegovina and an absolute must-visit during your time in Jajce.
Dating back to the medieval period, this impressive hilltop fortress once served as the seat of Bosnian kings and offers a fascinating glimpse into the country’s rich history.
The climb up is short but a little steep, so make sure to wear comfortable shoes. Trust me, the views are more than worth the effort.
Opening hours – 10am to 6pm
Entrance fee – 5KM/person

3. Visit the waterfalls at Konoba Slapovi
Just a short drive from Jajce lies one of the area’s most beautiful hidden gems: the waterfalls at Konoba Slapovi. Tucked away in a lush green setting along the Pliva River, this peaceful spot feels worlds away from the busier attractions in town. A series of small cascades tumble over moss-covered rocks, creating a picture-perfect scene that looks like something straight out of a fairytale.
What makes this place even more special is the traditional restaurant overlooking the waterfalls. We loved sitting on the terrace, listening to the sound of rushing water while enjoying a drink and simply taking in the view.

4. Walk across the Bridge of Love
While the bridge itself isn’t particularly large, its setting is absolutely beautiful. Surrounded by lush greenery and overlooking the turquoise waters below, it’s the perfect place to pause for a moment and soak in the peaceful atmosphere of Jajce.
It’s one of the town’s lesser-known but incredibly charming spots!

5. Enjoy an evening dinner at Pliva Lake
After a day spent exploring waterfalls, medieval streets, and historic landmarks, there’s no better way to end your time in Jajce than with dinner overlooking the beautiful Pliva Lakes.
We loved sitting by the water, watching the reflections dance across the lake while enjoying traditional Bosnian dishes. If you’re spending the night in Jajce, I highly recommend setting aside an evening for the lakes.
💡 TIP – Grab dinner at Restaurant Plaža for excellent lake views and excellent Cevapi!

6. Visit the Mlinčići Watermills
Located between the beautiful Pliva Lakes, these charming wooden mills seem as if they’ve been lifted straight from a fairytale. Built centuries ago, the small watermills once played an important role in local life, using the power of the rushing water to grind grain for nearby villages.
Today, they’re one of the most photographed places in the region—and for good reason. Wooden bridges crisscross the crystal-clear streams, tiny waterfalls tumble beneath the mills, and the entire area is surrounded by lush greenery.
💡 TIP – There’s a small playground right next to it!

7. Drive the M16 next to the Vrbas river
One of the most beautiful drives in all of Bosnia & Herzegovina is without a doubt the stretch of the M16 road that follows the Vrbas River between Jajce and Banja Luka.
As the road winds its way through the canyon, you’ll be treated to spectacular views of emerald-green water, dramatic limestone cliffs, and dense forests clinging to the mountainsides.
We highly recommend taking your time on this route rather than rushing from one destination to the next. Pull over at one of the viewpoints, soak in the scenery, and simply enjoy the journey.
💡 TIP – We drove up until this Vrbas viewpoint and then headed back towards Jajce.
