Skadar Lake is one of the most beautiful and underrated places to visit in Montenegro. Located on the border between Montenegro and Albania, this vast freshwater lake is known for its peaceful scenery, dramatic mountain backdrops, tiny fishing villages, floating water lilies, and incredible viewpoints.
After exploring Montenegro’s rugged mountains and sparkling coastline, Skadar Lake feels like a completely different side of the country. Life moves slower here, the landscapes are softer, and the best way to experience the lake is by taking your time: driving along scenic roads, stopping at viewpoints, wandering through small villages, and heading out on the water by boat.
Whether you’re planning a day trip from the coast or adding Skadar Lake to a bigger Montenegro road trip, it’s absolutely worth including in your itinerary. From the famous Pavlova Strana viewpoint and the charming village of Virpazar to boat tours, hidden viewpoints, and peaceful lakeside stops, there’s so much more to this area than you might expect.
In this Skadar Lake travel guide, I’m sharing the best things to do, the most beautiful viewpoints, how to visit, where to stay, and practical tips to help you plan your trip to one of Montenegro’s most scenic national parks.

How to reach Skadar Lake
Skadar Lake is located in southern Montenegro, close to the border with Albania, and is easy to add to a Montenegro road trip. The most popular starting point for visiting the lake is the small town of Virpazar, which is often considered the gateway to Skadar Lake National Park.
The easiest way to reach Skadar Lake is by car. Having your own rental car gives you the most flexibility, especially if you want to visit viewpoints like Pavlova Strana, drive along the scenic lake roads, or combine several small villages and photo stops in one day. Some of the roads around Skadar Lake are narrow and winding, so take your time and avoid rushing, especially if you’re not used to mountain roads.
🚗 Rent a car by using SunnyCars. There’s never any hidden costs with them and free cancellation up to 1 hour before rental start. Their price is transparent and everything is included.
From Kotor – 1.5 hours driving time
From Podgorica – 30 minutes driving time

You can also visit Skadar Lake by train or bus, with connections between Podgorica, Bar, and Virpazar. This can work well if you only want to visit Virpazar and take a boat tour from there, but public transport is less convenient if you want to explore the viewpoints and quieter corners of the lake.
Best time to visit Skadar Lake
The best time to visit Skadar Lake is during spring and early autumn, especially from April to June and September to October. During these months, the weather is usually warm and pleasant and the landscapes are beautifully green.
Spring is one of the most beautiful times to visit Skadar Lake. The water levels are often higher, the surrounding nature is lush, and you’ll see plenty of birds around the lake. It’s also a great time for photography, especially if you want those soft green landscapes and peaceful boat tour views.
The best time of day to visit Skadar Lake is either early morning or late afternoon. Early morning is perfect for a peaceful boat tour, calm water, cooler temperatures, and fewer crowds around Virpazar. Late afternoon is ideal if you want to visit the viewpoints, especially Pavlova Strana, when the light is softer and the landscape looks even more beautiful.

Where to stay when visiting Skadar Lake

Cottage retreat – Skadar Lake
When visiting Skadar Lake a lot of people stay in the small town of Virpazar. However I wanted to find a place a little more secluded but still close by.
Cottage retreat – Skadar Lake offered just that! There are two wooden chalets overlooking the mountains and a lot of space outside for a kid to blow off some steam.
Best things to do at Skadar Lake
1. Take a boat tour from Virpazar
One of the best things to do at Skadar Lake is to take a boat tour from Virpazar. This small lakeside town is the main gateway to Skadar Lake National Park and the easiest place to arrange a boat trip.
A boat tour is the perfect way to experience the lake from the water, especially if you want to see the floating water lilies, reed beds, birdlife, and peaceful landscapes up close. Depending on the season, you might spot herons, cormorants, pelicans, and other birds that make the lake such an important nature reserve.

I’d recommend going early in the morning if you can. The water is usually calmer, the light is softer, and the whole experience feels much more peaceful before the midday heat and crowds arrive.
💡 TIP – I highly recommend booking a private morning tour with Kingfisher Boat & Kayak. They have more than 20 years of experience and are one of the only tour companies offering tours on the original wooden boats.

2. Visit the Pavlova Strana viewpoint
Pavlova Strana is one of the most famous viewpoints in Montenegro, and for good reason. From here, you get that iconic view over a dramatic horseshoe bend in the Rijeka Crnojevića River, with lush green hills and winding water below.
It’s one of the best photo spots near Skadar Lake and an absolute must if you’re exploring the area by car. The road to get there is narrow and winding in places, so take your time and drive carefully.
💡 TIP – For the best light, visit in the late afternoon or around golden hour. The view is beautiful at any time of day, but softer light makes the landscape look even more magical.

3. Explore Virpazar
Virpazar may be small, but it’s the main hub for visiting Skadar Lake and a lovely place to start your trip. You’ll find restaurants, boat tour operators, small guesthouses, and a relaxed lakeside atmosphere.
It’s not a place where you need a lot of time, but it’s worth walking around before or after your boat tour.

4. Drive the scenic roads around the lake
One of the best ways to experience Skadar Lake is by car. The roads around the lake take you past small villages, vineyards, viewpoints, stone houses, and peaceful stretches of countryside.
Some roads are narrow and winding, but that’s part of the adventure. Take it slow, stop often, and don’t try to rush from one viewpoint to the next. The drive itself is one of the highlights of visiting Skadar Lake.
5. Go birdwatching
Skadar Lake is one of the most important bird habitats in the Balkans, so it’s a fantastic place for birdwatching. Even if you’re not a serious birdwatcher, it’s still amazing to see how much wildlife lives around the lake.
The best birdwatching is usually in spring and autumn, when the lake is full of life and migratory birds pass through the area. Bring binoculars if you have them, especially if you’re taking a boat tour.

6. Enjoy a lakeside lunch
Another lovely thing to do at Skadar Lake is to slow down and enjoy a meal by the water. Many restaurants in and around Virpazar and Rijeka Crnojevića serve fresh fish from the lake, local wine, salads, and simple Montenegrin dishes.
💡 TIP – You can combine a delicious lunch with the most spectacular view over Skadar Lake at Konoba Ceklin.

7. Visit Rijeka Crnojevića
Rijeka Crnojevića is a small historic village located along the river that flows into Skadar Lake. It’s a quiet and atmospheric place with an old stone bridge, riverside restaurants, and beautiful scenery all around.
It makes a lovely stop if you’re visiting the Pavlova Strana viewpoint, as the two are close to each other. You can walk around the village, enjoy the river views, or stop for lunch by the water.
8. Visit Karuč
Another beautiful place to visit around Skadar Lake is Karuč, a tiny fishing village tucked away along the northern side of the lake. It’s much quieter than Virpazar and feels like one of those places where time has almost stood still.
The drive to Karuč is part of the adventure, with narrow winding roads and lovely views along the way. Take your time, drive carefully, and avoid rushing this part of the route. If you’re exploring Skadar Lake by car, Karuč makes a wonderful stop together with Rijeka Crnojevića and the Pavlova Strana viewpoint.
