When planning our trip to the Provence I did a lot of research on where to stay to be pretty much at the centre of all of the places that we wanted to visit. I also wanted to stay at a traditional french house with those typical pastel colored window shutters, a big backyard and a pool. Enter Eygalières, one of the most charming villages in the Provence!
Nestled in the heart of the Alpilles mountain range in France, this enchanting village is a dream come true if you’re seeking the quintessential Provencal experience. Imagine wandering through narrow cobblestone streets lined with ancient stone houses, savoring the scent of lavender in the air, and indulging in the delicious local cuisine at quaint cafes.
Whether you’re a history buff eager to explore medieval ruins, an art enthusiast drawn to the works of local artists, or a nature lover ready to hike the scenic trails of the Alpilles, Eygalières has something for everyone.

A little history about Eygalières
Eygalières, perched on a hill in the Alpilles range of Provence, boasts a rich history that dates back to Roman times. The village began to take shape in the medieval period, growing around a fortified castle whose ruins can still be explored today. The 12th-century Chapelle Saint-Sixte, located just outside the village, is a significant historical landmark, reflecting Eygalières’ medieval religious importance. Over the centuries, the village evolved as an agricultural hub, with its fertile lands supporting the cultivation of olives, grapes, and other Provencal crops.
In the 20th century, Eygalières became a haven for artists and writers drawn to its picturesque landscapes and timeless charm. Today, it has grown into a popular tourist destination while maintaining its traditional character and serene atmosphere. The village’s well-preserved architecture, cultural festivals, and vibrant local markets provide a glimpse into its rich heritage, making Eygalières a captivating blend of historical legacy and modern Provencal life.

The best time to visit Eygalières
The best time to visit Eygalières is during the spring (April to June) and fall (September to October). During these periods, the weather is mild and pleasant, making it ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and exploring the village. Spring brings vibrant flowers and lush greenery, while fall offers the grape and olive harvests, adding to the region’s charm. These seasons also see fewer tourists compared to the summer months.
Summer (July to August) is also a popular time to visit, especially for those interested in local festivals and the famous lavender fields in full bloom. However, it can be quite hot, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C (86°F), and the village tends to be more crowded.
Visit on a Friday to experience the local market, where you can buy fresh produce, cheeses, olive oil, and other regional specialties. It’s also a great opportunity to interact with locals and learn more about Provencal culture.
Every last Sunday of every month there is also a brocante market at Eygalières from 7am to 5pm.
