There’s just something about Christmas in France that feels extra magical — and nowhere is that more true than in Alsace. Think half-timbered houses draped in fairy lights, cobbled streets dusted with frost, and the smell of mulled wine and cinnamon floating through medieval villages. Visiting the Christmas markets here honestly feels like stepping straight into a fairytale.
During our winter travels through eastern France, we explored some of the most beautiful (and atmospheric) markets in the region — and a few places completely stole our hearts. Colmar with its canals and endless lights, the storybook village of Riquewihr, and postcard-perfect Eguisheim — each one feels unique, cosy, and wonderfully festive in its own way.
In this guide, I’m sharing the best Christmas markets in France, focusing on the Alsace region and exactly why these three towns deserve a spot on your winter itinerary. You’ll find honest tips based on personal experience, what makes each market special, and how to combine them into an unforgettable Christmas road trip.

The Best Christmas Markets in Alsace
1. Colmar – The Most Magical & Photogenic
Colmar is the showstopper. With multiple Christmas markets spread throughout the old town, it feels like the entire city transforms into a festive wonderland.
What makes it special:
- Several themed markets instead of just one
- Fairytale canals in Little Venice lit up with reflections
- The biggest variety of food, crafts, and gifts
- Perfect balance between festive buzz and romantic charm
Favourite photography spots:
- Rue des Tanneurs
- Quai de la Poissonnerie
- Rue des Écoles
- Pont Saint Pierre
- Brasserie des Tanneurs
💡 TIP – Best for first-time visitors to Alsace, photography lovers, and anyone who wants the full Christmas market experience.
🅿️ PARKING – Parking inside the historic center is impossible during Christmas. Once 10am police officers will patrol the city and if you’re still parked there you will get fined and towed. There is a big parking lot only 5 minutes walking and for a full day you pay around €6.

2. Riquewihr – A Storybook Medieval Village
Riquewihr feels like stepping straight into a Christmas fairytale. The village is small, medieval, and beautifully preserved — and during December, it’s completely wrapped in lights, garlands, and Christmas decorations.
What makes it special:
- One main street lined with half-timbered houses
- Incredibly atmospheric after dark
- Traditional, old-fashioned Christmas feel
- Fewer stalls, but lots of charm
💡 TIP – if you have the chance make sure to check out the beautiful Christmas store Féerie de Noël.
🅿️ PARKING – There is a big parking lot on both sides of the city. But make sure to arrive early cause they fill up fast!

3. Eguisheim – Intimate, Cosy & Authentic
Eguisheim is smaller and quieter than Colmar and Riquewihr, but that’s exactly its charm. Its circular village layout, colourful houses, and soft lighting make it feel incredibly warm and local.
What makes it special:
- A small, intimate Christmas market around the village square
- Less crowded, especially in the evenings
- Strong community feel — very local and authentic
- Beautiful wine village atmosphere
🅿️ PARKING – There is a big parking lot 5 minutes walking from the center.

When to visit the Christmas Markets in Alsace
The Christmas markets in Alsace usually run from late November until just before Christmas (around 23–24 December), with some markets in larger towns staying open slightly longer. While exact dates vary by village, the festive season across Alsace follows a fairly similar rhythm.
💡 TIP – December in Alsace is cold, sometimes foggy, and occasionally snowy — which honestly only adds to the atmosphere. Dress warmly, wear good walking shoes (cobbled streets!), and plan warm drink breaks often.

Right: Canals in Colmar
Best Time of the Season
- Late November & early December are hands-down the best time to visit. The decorations are freshly lit, the villages feel magical but not overcrowded yet, and you can wander at a relaxed pace.
- Mid-December (especially weekends) is peak season. Places like Colmar, Riquewihr, and Eguisheim get extremely busy — atmospheric, yes, but expect crowds and limited parking.
💡 TIP – If you want charm without the chaos, aim for weekdays in early December.
Best Time of Day
Alsace Christmas markets truly shine after sunset, when fairy lights glow against half-timbered houses and everything feels straight out of a snow globe.
- Late afternoon → early evening is ideal
- Arrive before dark, explore in daylight, then stay for the lights
- Smaller villages (like Eguisheim) feel especially magical once it’s dark

How to get around
By Car – The Best & Most Flexible Option
If you want to visit multiple villages, renting a car is hands-down the easiest and most practical way to explore Alsace.
🚗 Rent a car by using SunnyCars. There’s never any hidden costs with them and free cancellation up to 1 hour before rental start. Their price is transparent and everything is included.
Distances are short:
- Colmar → Eguisheim: ±15 minutes
- Colmar → Riquewihr: ±25 minutes
Why a car works so well:
- You can easily combine big towns + small villages in one day
- You’re not tied to train or bus schedules
- Perfect for visiting villages after dark, when they’re most magical
💡 TIP – Park just outside village centres and walk in — historic cores are often pedestrianised and parking fills up fast in December.

Where to eat
100% Le Bar à Jus – For some delicious vegetarian options and to detox from all the hot coco.
Le Boudoir – The perfect place for lunch! Plus their hot chocolate milk is about the size of your face.

Indulge in some of the many treats the Christmas Market has to offer such as mulled wine, bretzels, pancakes, waffles, etc.

Where to stay in Colmar
L’Esquisse Hotel & Spa Colmar – This 5-star hotel blends modern design with Alsatian elegance and a fantastic location just steps from the old town and canals. It’s widely regarded as one of the top luxury stays in Colmar, with spacious rooms, a stylish spa (complete with a heated pool and wellness facilities), and excellent service.
La Maison des Têtes – Relais & Châteaux – Set in a beautifully restored 17th-century mansion in the heart of the old town, this Relais & Châteaux property offers timeless elegance with Alsatian heritage. The Michelin-starred Restaurant Girardin makes it a standout choice for food lovers, and the rooms combine historic charm with refined comfort.

While slightly less lavish than a 5-star, it’s a superb luxury choice for those who want style, great service, and a central location that puts you within easy walking distance of all the Christmas market squares.
