Are you ready to spend a week wandering through storybook landscapes, exploring grand castles, and soaking up the crisp mountain air? Bavaria, in the south of Germany, is the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve stepped straight into a fairytale—think pastel villages framed by the Alps, shimmering lakes, and turrets that look like they were designed by Disney himself.
On our recent trip, we spent 7 days road-tripping through Bavaria. One day you’re standing in awe in front of Neuschwanstein Castle, the next you’re hiking along alpine trails with panoramic views that make you forget all about the real world. And in between? Pretzels, beer gardens, and charming cobblestone towns that make you want to linger just a little longer.
In this guide, I’ll share our complete 7-day Bavaria travel itinerary, packed with the best castles, lakes, mountains, and insider tips to make your trip run smoothly. You’ll find detailed day-by-day plans, driving routes, where to stay, and those little “wow” moments you won’t find in a standard guidebook. Whether it’s your first time in Germany or you’re coming back for another round of Alpine magic, this itinerary will help you make the most of every single day.

Where to start and end your Bavaria road trip
For this 7-day Bavaria itinerary, the most efficient route is to fly into Frankfurt Airport and fly out of Munich Airport. This way, you can make your way across southern Germany without having to backtrack, squeezing the most out of your week. Both airports are major international hubs, so you’ll have plenty of flight options—and picking up your rental car right at the airport makes hitting the road a breeze.
Having your own rental car is essential for this road trip. It gives you the flexibility to explore charming villages, scenic backroads, and hidden gems that public transport just can’t reach—plus, you’ll be able to set your own pace rather than rushing for train schedules.

Transportation for this Bavaria Itinerary
The easiest and most enjoyable way to explore Bavaria is by rental car. While Germany’s train network is excellent, it simply can’t match the flexibility of having your own set of wheels—especially when it comes to reaching those dreamy alpine villages, scenic mountain passes, and tucked-away castles.
We picked up our rental car directly at the airport (you can do this in either Frankfurt or Munich), which meant we could get straight on the road without losing any time. The roads in Bavaria are well-maintained, and driving here is a pleasure—think smooth highways, clearly marked scenic routes, and the occasional stretch of Autobahn where there’s no speed limit if you feel like channeling your inner race car driver.

Best time to visit Bavaria
If your itinerary is focused on hiking, scenic drives, and soaking up Bavaria’s outdoors, the best time to visit is from late May to early October. This is when alpine trails are snow-free, mountain huts are open, and the weather is warm enough to enjoy those sparkling lakes and beer gardens.
June and September are particularly great months—they offer mild temperatures, fewer crowds than peak summer, and plenty of daylight for exploring. July and August bring the warmest weather but also the most tourists, so you’ll want to book accommodation well in advance.
If you’re here for autumn colors, plan your trip for late September to mid-October, when the mountains turn golden and the villages start celebrating harvest season. And of course, Munich’s Oktoberfest (late September to early October) is world-famous, but expect higher prices and busier roads if you visit during this time.

Bavaria day by day itinerary
Day 1
Frankfurt to Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Route: Frankfurt → Schloss Mespelbrunn → Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Driving Distance: ~220 km / 137 miles
Driving Time: ± 3 hours (excluding stops)
Your Bavaria adventure kicks off with a scenic drive from Frankfurt into the heart of Franconia. But before heading straight to Rothenburg, make a stop at the storybook-perfect Schloss Mespelbrunn. Hidden away in the Spessart forest, this moated castle feels like it’s been plucked from a fairy tale—complete with turrets, ivy-covered walls, and reflections dancing on the water. You can take a guided tour to peek inside and hear the fascinating history of the castle and the noble family who still lives there today.

From there, continue your drive to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, one of Germany’s best-preserved medieval towns. Once you pass through the city gates, it’s like stepping back in time—cobblestone streets, pastel half-timbered houses, and flower boxes bursting with color. Spend the evening wandering the old town, walking part of the city wall, and soaking up the golden-hour glow over the Market Square.
End the day with a cozy dinner in one of the traditional Franconian restaurants—Gasthof Goldener Greifen is a great choice for hearty regional dishes paired with local wine or beer. Then rest up for tomorrow’s adventures in one of Rothenburg’s charming boutique hotels.

Day 2
Rothenburg ob der Tauber to Oberstdorf & Hike to Schrecksee
Route: Rothenburg ob der Tauber → Hinterstein (Oberstdorf) → Schrecksee → Oberstdorf
Driving Distance: ~290 km / 180 miles
Driving Time: ± 3 h 30 min (excluding stops)
Today is all about early alarms and alpine magic. You’ll want to leave Rothenburg ob der Tauber no later than 5:00 a.m. to make the ~3.5-hour drive to Hinterstein in time for the first bus to the Schrecksee trailhead at the Auele power station. The first bus usually leaves around 9:15 a.m. and saves you an extra 3 km of flat road walking each way—energy you’ll be thankful to have on the steeper sections ahead.

The Schrecksee hike is a bucket-list Bavarian adventure—16 km (10 mi) round trip, 1,000 m (3,280 ft) elevation gain, and 6–8 hours of pure alpine bliss. From the bus drop-off, the trail eases you in with a gentle start through green meadows before it quickly turns steep, zigzagging up forested slopes and into rugged alpine terrain. You’ll climb past waterfalls, open pastures, and finally crest a ridge that reveals Schrecksee in all its glory—a turquoise jewel with an island at its center, framed by sharp peaks.
Pack a hearty picnic, plenty of water, and be ready for some weather shifts—it’s a mountain hike through and through. There are no huts along the route, and since the lake sits inside a nature reserve, swimming and camping aren’t allowed.

After soaking in the views, retrace your steps back to Hinterstein, hop on the return bus, and drive to your hotel in Oberstdorf for a well-earned dinner and early night.
Day 3
Oberstdorf to Garmisch-Partenkirchen & Relax at the Eibsee
Route: Oberstdorf → Eibsee → Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Driving Distance: ~125 km / 78 miles
Driving Time: ± 2 hours
After yesterday’s big Schrecksee adventure, today is all about slowing down and soaking up some Bavarian lake magic. Leave Oberstdorf at a relaxed pace and head toward Eibsee, often called the most beautiful lake in Germany. Located at the foot of the mighty Zugspitze, the country’s highest mountain, the Eibsee is famous for its crystal-clear waters, vibrant turquoise shallows, and small islands scattered across its surface.

You can spend the morning walking the 7 km (4.3 mi) loop trail that hugs the shoreline—an easy, mostly flat path with countless viewpoints to stop for photos. If the weather’s warm, rent a stand-up paddleboard or a small rowboat and explore from the water. Or, simply find a quiet spot, dip your feet in, and enjoy a picnic with mountain views.

If you’re up for a little extra, take the Zugspitze cable car right from Eibsee up to the summit for panoramic views stretching into Austria and Switzerland. But honestly, even without going up, this day is a feast for the eyes.
By late afternoon, make the short drive into Garmisch-Partenkirchen, check into your hotel, and enjoy a relaxed evening in the charming old town. Stroll past painted façades, browse local shops, and finish theday with a hearty Bavarian dinner—perhaps a plate of käsespätzle or schnitzel with a cold beer.
Day 4
Castles, Gorges & Sunset by the Lake
Route: Garmisch-Partenkirchen → Neuschwanstein → Pilgrimage Church of Wies → Leutasch-Klamm → Geroldsee → Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Driving Distance: ~160 km / 100 miles
Driving Time: ± 3.5 hours (total, excluding visits)
Start your day early and head to one of Germany’s most famous landmarks — Neuschwanstein Castle. Arriving before 9 a.m. is key if you want to beat the tour buses and grab that classic shot from Marienbrücke, the suspension bridge with the best castle views. Inside, Neuschwanstein is a tribute to King Ludwig II’s romantic vision, with rooms inspired by German legends and fairy tales.

After soaking in the castle magic, take a scenic drive to the Pilgrimage Church of Wies (Wieskirche), a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Bavaria’s most beautiful Rococo churches. Even if you’re not usually a “church person,” the ornate stucco, soft pastels, and intricate details here are jaw-dropping.
Next up is a bit of nature — head toward Leutasch-Klamm, a dramatic gorge straddling the German-Austrian border. The steel walkways wind above turquoise rushing water, and there’s even a magical “goblin” theme that kids will love. The full loop is about 3 km (1.8 mi) and offers plenty of photo stops along the way.
End your day with a short drive to Geroldsee, one of Bavaria’s most picturesque alpine lakes. Arrive in time for sunset, when the Karwendel mountains glow pink and gold in the fading light, and the traditional wooden huts by the lake add the perfect Bavarian touch. It’s a peaceful, postcard-perfect way to wrap up the day before heading back to Garmisch-Partenkirchen for the night.

Day 5
Scenic Drive to Berchtesgaden & Lake Hintersee Magic
Route: Garmisch-Partenkirchen → Hintersee → Zauberwald → Maria Gern → Berchtesgaden
Driving Distance: ~230 km / 143 miles
Driving Time: ± 3.5 hours (excluding visits)
Today you trade the Zugspitze region for the jaw-dropping alpine beauty of Berchtesgaden National Park. Leave Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the morning and enjoy one of Bavaria’s most scenic drives east, passing through rolling hills, alpine meadows, and mountain backdrops.
Your first stop is the Hintersee, one of the dreamiest lakes in Germany. Nestled in the Ramsau Valley, this emerald-green lake is surrounded by dense forest and towering peaks. If you have time, walk the 2.5 km (1.5 mi) loop around the lake — it’s flat, easy, and full of photogenic spots.
From here, step right into a fairy tale at the Zauberwald (Magic Forest), a short and enchanting trail that connects Hintersee to the surrounding forest. The moss-covered rocks, rushing streams, and dappled sunlight give it an almost otherworldly feel.

Before heading into town, make one last stop at the Maria Gern Chapel, a small pink-and-white baroque beauty framed perfectly by the Watzmann mountain. It’s one of the most photographed chapels in the region and even more magical in the soft afternoon light.

Finish the day by checking into your hotel in Berchtesgaden, ready for several days of exploring Bavaria’s alpine crown jewel.
Day 6
Hike the Watzmann & Drive the Rossfeld Panoramastrasse
Route: Berchtesgaden → Watzmann Hike → Rossfeld Panoramastrasse → Berchtesgaden
Driving Distance: ± 50 km / 31 miles (not including hiking)
Driving Time: ± 1.5 hours total
Get ready for a day that blends one of Bavaria’s most iconic hikes with one of its most beautiful mountain drives. Start the morning early with a hike on the Watzmann, Berchtesgaden’s legendary peak. While the full summit climb is only for seasoned mountaineers, there are shorter, more accessible trails that still deliver breathtaking views — like the hike up to the Watzmannhaus (approx. 6.5 km / 4 mi one way, 1,200 m / 3,937 ft elevation gain, 3–4 hours). This route winds through alpine meadows before opening up to vast mountain panoramas, with the Watzmann massif dominating the skyline.

After the hike, reward yourself with an afternoon drive along the Rossfeld Panoramastrasse, Germany’s highest scenic toll road. This circular route winds up to 1,570 m (5,150 ft), offering endless views over the Berchtesgaden Alps and across the border into Austria. There are plenty of pull-outs along the way — perfect for photo stops or simply soaking in the mountain serenity.

By evening, return to Berchtesgaden for a relaxed dinner at one of the cozy alpine restaurants. Whether you choose hearty käsespätzle, roast pork, or fresh trout from the Königssee, it’s the perfect end to a day of Bavarian mountain magic.
Day 7
Rabenwand Viewpoint, Königssee Boat Ride & Hike to Obersee
Route: Berchtesgaden → Königssee → Rabenwand → Obersee → Berchtesgaden/Munich
Driving Distance: ± 50 km / 31 miles (Berchtesgaden to Munich is ~155 km / 96 miles)
Driving Time: ± 1.5 hours local driving + 2 hours to Munich
Your final day in Bavaria begins with a short but rewarding hike to the Rabenwand Viewpoint. This trail is only about 3 km (1.8 mi) round-trip, but it delivers one of the most spectacular views over the Königssee — the emerald-green lake framed by towering cliffs and the Watzmann massif. If you go early, you’ll have a good chance of enjoying the lookout in peaceful morning light.

Next, head to the Königssee pier and board one of the electric boats that glide silently across the lake. The journey to Salet is worth it for the scenery alone, but the real magic begins once you step ashore and start the short 10–15 minute walk to Obersee. This glassy, turquoise lake sits like a hidden gem behind the mountains, with the Röthbachfall — Germany’s highest waterfall — cascading in the distance.
The flat path around Obersee is perfect for a relaxed stroll, and if the weather’s kind, you might even catch the lake reflecting the surrounding peaks like a mirror. Before heading back, stop at the small alpine hut for a simple but satisfying snack — a slice of fresh bread topped with local cheese or cured ham.

Return by boat to Schönau am Königssee, then either spend a final evening in Berchtesgaden or begin your drive to Munich for your flight home.
