If there’s one place that truly surprised us during the festive season, it’s the Bonn Christmas Market. Set against the elegant streets and historic squares of Bonn, this Christmas market feels cosy, authentic, and refreshingly local — without the overwhelming crowds you’ll find in bigger German cities.
We visited Bonn in the run-up to Christmas, wandering from stall to stall with steaming mugs of Glühwein in hand, fairy lights overhead, and that unmistakable festive buzz in the air. Think half-timbered houses, handcrafted gifts and traditional treats.
In this guide, I’m sharing everything you need to know to visit the Bonn Christmas Market: when to go, where to find the best stalls, what to eat and drink, and a few insider tips to make the most of your visit. Whether you’re planning a festive weekend getaway or adding Bonn to a Rhine Valley itinerary, this is one Christmas market that absolutely deserves a spot on your list!

When to visit the Bonn Christmas Market
The main markets typically open from late November through just before Christmas, and spread across several squares — each with its own vibe and treasures to discover.
Most stalls and food vendors are open from around 11:00 until 20:30 or 21:00 daily, though exact hours can vary slightly depending on the square and day of the week.

How to reach Bonn
Bonn is very well connected by public transport, making it a great stop if you’re travelling through Germany.
- By train – Bonn has two main stations: Bonn Hauptbahnhof (right in the city centre) and Bonn-Beuel on the east side of the Rhine. From Cologne, it’s only about 20–30 minutes by train, which makes Bonn a perfect alternative to Cologne’s busy Christmas markets.
- By plane – The closest airport is Cologne Bonn Airport, just a 25-minute drive or an easy train ride away.
- By car – Bonn is easily accessible via the A555 (from Cologne) and A565 (from the north and east).

If you’re visiting Bonn by car, parking is surprisingly straightforward — especially compared to larger German cities.
- City centre parking garages are your best option. Some of the most convenient ones are:
- Marktgarage Bonn – close to Münsterplatz
- Friedensplatzgarage – ideal for the main Christmas market areas
- Operngarage Bonn – perfect if you’re combining the market with a Rhine walk
- Park & Ride is a great alternative if you want to avoid city traffic altogether. Park on the outskirts and take the tram or bus into the centre — public transport in Bonn is reliable and frequent, even in winter.
💡TIP – Most Christmas markets are located within walking distance of each other, so once you’re parked (or arrive by train), you won’t need your car again.

Where is the Bonn Christmas Market located?
Here’s where you’ll find the main spots 👇
🎄 Münsterplatz – The Heart of the Market
This is the largest and most popular Christmas market in Bonn, set right in front of the impressive Bonn Minster. Expect classic wooden stalls, twinkling lights, plenty of food options, and a lively atmosphere — especially in the evenings. If it’s your first time visiting, this is the perfect place to start.

✨ Friedensplatz – Cosy & Local
Just a short walk from Münsterplatz, Friedensplatz feels a bit more intimate. You’ll find handcrafted gifts, decorations, and smaller food stalls here. It’s usually a little quieter and great if you prefer browsing without big crowds.
🕯 Bottlerplatz – Charming and Traditional
Bottlerplatz is one of the most atmospheric spots, with half-timbered houses framing the square. It’s smaller, but incredibly charming — ideal for picking up unique gifts or enjoying a mulled wine in a more laid-back setting.
💡 TIP – All these squares are located in Bonn’s pedestrian-friendly old town, so you can easily wander from one market to the next in under 10 minutes — no planning stress required.

What to Eat & Drink at the Bonn Christmas Market
Here’s what you must try when you visit.
Glühwein — Mulled Wine Magic
You can’t visit a Weihnachtsmarkt without a cup of Glühwein (mulled wine). Warm, spiced with cinnamon and cloves, and served in a festive mug — it’s basically holiday spirit in a cup. In Bonn you’ll find classic versions and sometimes fruity twists (like Kirsch-Glühwein or Himbeer-Glühwein).
💡 TIP – You’ll have to pay a deposit for your mug but every Christmas Market has its own festive mug which you can actually collect. You can even ask the vendors for a clean one after returning your used one.
Bratwurst & Currywurst — Classic German Comfort
Sausage stands are everywhere and for good reason. Juicy Bratwurst straight off the grill, or a spicy Currywurst with ketchup and curry powder — they’re perfect if you want something savoury between sweet treats.
Reibekuchen — Crispy Potato Pancakes
Golden, crispy, and often served with applesauce, Reibekuchen are the ultimate winter comfort snack. Grab a paper plate and munch your way through the market while you sip your Glühwein.
Schweinshaxe or Steak Sandwiches
Some stalls serve heartier eats like Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle) or grilled steak sandwiches — ideal if you’re visiting around mealtime and want something more substantial to warm you up.
Lebkuchen & Weihnachtsgebäck — Sweet Traditions
You’ll see beautifully decorated Lebkuchenherzen (gingerbread hearts) and piles of traditional German Christmas cookies (Weihnachtsgebäck). These make for great snacks and even better souvenirs.
Kinderpunsch — For the Little Ones
Not a drinker? No worries — Kinderpunsch is the non-alcoholic version of mulled wine, warm and spiced just the same. Kids (and designated drivers) will love it.
Apfelpunsch & Winter Warmers
Beyond Glühwein, there are other warm drinks like Apfelpunsch (spiced apple punch) or hot chocolate with whipped cream — perfect if you’re craving something sweet and cozy.
💡 TIP – Most stalls accept cash, but many also take card payments — though cash can be faster (and is appreciated by smaller vendors).

Where to stay
Marriott Hotel Cologne – Best Overall (Even If You’re Visiting Bonn)
Why it’s great:
- Excellent train access – Cologne’s main station (Köln Hbf) is a short walk from the hotel, and frequent trains connect Cologne ↔ Bonn (about 20–30 minutes). This means you’re essentially staying near Bonn without sacrificing comfort or quality.
- Spacious, modern rooms – After a day of wandering Christmas markets in chilly weather, you’ll appreciate the plush beds, large bathrooms, and thoughtful room design.
- Fantastic facilities – A fitness, sauna, restaurant & bar — great for unwinding after an evening under the lights.
- Festive vibe + social spaces – The lobby and bar area feel warm and inviting in winter, making it easy to relax with a drink before heading back out.
- City options for evenings – Cologne has a vibrant nightlife and lots of festive events in December — so you get a bonus destination without going far.
💡 TIP – Best for travelers who want comfort, convenience, and a springboard for Christmas market day trips (Bonn, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Aachen).
