If there’s one place that fully embraces the festive season, it’s the Cologne Christmas Market. Spread across several beautiful squares and set against iconic landmarks like the cathedral, Cologne’s Christmas markets are lively, atmospheric, and wonderfully over-the-top — in the best possible way.
One moment you’re sipping Glühwein under the towering Cologne Cathedral, the next you’re wandering into a smaller, cosier market with fairy lights, live music, and the smell of roasted almonds in the air. It’s busy, yes — but it’s also incredibly festive and full of energy.
In this guide, I’m sharing everything you need to know to visit the Cologne Christmas Market: when to go, where to find the best markets, what to eat and drink, and how to plan your visit without feeling overwhelmed.
Ready for twinkling lights, cathedral views, and more Christmas markets than you can count? ✨🎄

When to visit the Cologne Christmas Market
The Cologne Christmas Markets usually run from late November until just before Christmas (around 23 December), with some markets staying open a few days longer. While exact dates can vary slightly each year, this timeframe is perfect for soaking up peak festive vibes.
🎄 Best Time of the Season
- Late November & early December are ideal if you want to enjoy the markets before the biggest crowds arrive. The decorations are fresh, the stalls are fully stocked, and the atmosphere feels extra exciting.
- Mid-December is the most festive — but also the busiest. Expect crowds, especially in the evenings and on weekends, particularly around the Cathedral market.
If you prefer a calmer visit, aim for early December on a weekday.
✨ Best Time of Day
Cologne’s Christmas markets truly come alive after dark, usually from around 16:30 onwards, when the fairy lights, illuminated stalls, and cathedral backdrop create that classic Christmas market magic.

How to reach Cologne
Cologne is one of the easiest cities in Germany to reach, which makes it perfect for a Christmas market city break or day trip.
By Train
Travelling to Cologne by train is hands-down the easiest option — especially in December.
- From Bonn: ±20–30 minutes
- From Aachen: ±1 hour
- From Düsseldorf: ±30 minutes
- From Frankfurt: ±1 hour by ICE
You’ll arrive at Cologne Central Station (Köln Hbf), which is located right next to Cologne Cathedral and within walking distance of several Christmas markets. You honestly couldn’t ask for a better arrival point.
By Plane
The closest airport is Cologne Bonn Airport, located about 15 km from the city centre.
From the airport:
- Take the S-Bahn or regional train directly to Köln Hbf (±15 minutes)
- Or drive into the city in about 20–30 minutes, depending on traffic
By Car
Cologne is well connected by motorways, including the A1, A3, and A4, making it easy to reach by car from most parts of Germany and neighbouring countries.
That said, driving into the city centre in December isn’t ideal. Traffic can be heavy, and parking near the Christmas markets is limited.
💡 TIP – If you’re coming by car, park outside the centre and use Park & Ride, or aim for a hotel with parking like the Marriott Hotel Cologne and explore the markets on foot or by public transport.

Where is the Cologne Christmas Market located?
One of the things that makes Cologne so special at Christmas is that there isn’t just one market. Instead, the Cologne Christmas Market is made up of several different markets spread across the city centre, each with its own theme and atmosphere — and the best part? They’re all easy to combine.
Below I’ve listed out favorite ones!
Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market
This is the most iconic and most visited market in Cologne, set right next to the breathtaking Cologne Cathedral. Think towering Christmas tree, hundreds of lights, and stalls packed tightly beneath the cathedral’s spires. It’s busy, festive, and absolutely magical after dark.
Location: Roncalliplatz next to Cologne Cathedral

Altstadt Christmas Market
This market is located in the Cologne’s ‘Altstadt’ (the old town) on the Alter Markt and calls itself the Home of the Heinzelmännchen (who were little creatures from a Cologne legend who used to do all the housework until they were annoyed by an inquisitive housewife).
Location: Between the Heumarkt and the Alter Markt in the old town

The Angels’ Market
The Angels’ Market is the big market in the Neumarkt square, a little way outside the immediate city centre. It is one of the original markets that restarted the Christmas market boom in Cologne in the 70s.
Location: In the Neumarkt to the west of the city centre

Nikolausdorf
The “Nicholas Village” is a Christmas market in the Rudolfplatz square with good public transport connections.
Location: To the west of the city centre near the inner ring road.

What to Eat & Drink at the Cologne Christmas Market
Here’s what you must try when you visit.
Glühwein — Mulled Wine Magic
You can’t visit a Weihnachtsmarkt without a cup of Glühwein (mulled wine). Warm, spiced with cinnamon and cloves, and served in a festive mug — it’s basically holiday spirit in a cup. In Bonn you’ll find classic versions and sometimes fruity twists (like Kirsch-Glühwein or Himbeer-Glühwein).
💡 TIP – You’ll have to pay a deposit for your mug but every Christmas Market has its own festive mug which you can actually collect. You can even ask the vendors for a clean one after returning your used one.
Bratwurst & Currywurst — Classic German Comfort
Sausage stands are everywhere and for good reason. Juicy Bratwurst straight off the grill, or a spicy Currywurst with ketchup and curry powder — they’re perfect if you want something savoury between sweet treats.
Reibekuchen — Crispy Potato Pancakes
Golden, crispy, and often served with applesauce, Reibekuchen are the ultimate winter comfort snack. Grab a paper plate and munch your way through the market while you sip your Glühwein.
Schweinshaxe or Steak Sandwiches
Some stalls serve heartier eats like Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle) or grilled steak sandwiches — ideal if you’re visiting around mealtime and want something more substantial to warm you up.

Christmas Market day trips from Cologne
Aachen Christmas Markets – Just 1 hour by train from Cologne, Aachen is a festive favourite with a backdrop that combines grand cathedral architecture with cosy Christmas charm.
Bonn Christmas Market – About 30 minutes by train from Cologne, Bonn is a festive favourite with a backdrop that combines grand cathedral architecture with cosy Christmas charm.
Düsseldorf Christmas Markets – Around 1 hour by train from Bonn, Düsseldorf has several Christmas markets sprinkled across the Altstadt (Old Town).

How Many Days in Cologne
If you want the best balance of festive vibes and relaxed pacing, 2 days in Cologne is perfect. Add a third day only if you’re planning at least one Christmas market day trip for instance to the Aachen Christmas Market or Bonn Christmas Market.

Where to stay
Marriott Hotel Cologne – Best Overall (Even If You’re Visiting Bonn)
Why it’s great:
- Excellent train access – Cologne’s main station (Köln Hbf) is a short walk from the hotel, and frequent trains connect Cologne ↔ Bonn (about 20–30 minutes). This means you’re essentially staying near Bonn without sacrificing comfort or quality.
- Spacious, modern rooms – After a day of wandering Christmas markets in chilly weather, you’ll appreciate the plush beds, large bathrooms, and thoughtful room design.
- Fantastic facilities – A fitness, sauna, restaurant & bar — great for unwinding after an evening under the lights.
- Festive vibe + social spaces – The lobby and bar area feel warm and inviting in winter, making it easy to relax with a drink before heading back out.
- City options for evenings – Cologne has a vibrant nightlife and lots of festive events in December — so you get a bonus destination without going far.
💡 TIP – Best for travelers who want comfort, convenience, and a springboard for Christmas market day trips (Bonn, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Aachen).
