Assisi, a picturesque hilltop town in Umbria, is far more than just a postcard-perfect destination.
Steeped in history and spirituality, it’s best known as the birthplace of St. Francis, one of Italy’s most revered saints. Yet, Assisi’s appeal goes beyond its famous basilica and religious sites. This medieval gem is a place where cobblestone streets, ancient Roman ruins, and stunning panoramic views come together, offering visitors a blend of art and history.
Here’s a guide to the top things to do that will make your visit truly unforgettable!

Top Things To Do In Assisi
1. Visit the Basilica of St. Francis
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is not only a pilgrimage destination but also a masterpiece of medieval architecture, with its Upper and Lower Basilicas offering two distinct atmospheres.
The Upper Basilica, with its soaring Gothic ceilings and vibrant frescoes by Giotto, tells the story of St. Francis’s life through stunning artwork.
Meanwhile, the serene Lower Basilica, where St. Francis is buried, has a more serene atmosphere.
As you explore the basilica, you can feel the deep reverence that has drawn visitors for centuries, making it one of Italy’s most moving and memorable landmarks.

3. Visit the Basilica of Santa Chiara
Built in the 13th century, this stunning pink-and-white striped church is dedicated to St. Clare, a follower of St. Francis and the founder of the Order of Poor Clares, whose life and legacy are deeply intertwined with Assisi’s history.
Inside, you can admire simple yet elegant Gothic architecture, while the crypt houses the preserved body of St. Clare, drawing pilgrims from around the world.

Opening Hours – From 6.30am to 12pm and 2pm to 6pm

4. Hike up to Rocca Maggiore for the best view over Assisi
Hike up to this medieval fortress for panoramic views of Assisi and the surrounding Umbrian countryside.
Even though that we visited on a cloudy an rather grey day, the views from this particular spot were out of this world! There’s a small parking lot a little more down but Assisi is a small town, you might as well hike up to Rocca Maggiore from the centre.

5. Drive up to Vetta Monte Subasio
If you’re traveling around Umbria by car I highly recommend driving up to Vetta Monte Subasio. From the top, you’ll enjoy panoramic views stretching over the Umbrian Valley, including sights of Perugia, Spello, and even the distant Apennine Mountains on a clear day.
The way up starts with a paved road widing through the forest. after a few minutes you’ll start driving on a gravel road so make sure you watch out for the bottom of your car!

6. Visit the floral town of Spello
Visiting Spello is like entering a beautifully preserved time capsule of Italian charm. Nestled on the slopes of Monte Subasio, this small medieval town enchants you with its narrow, winding streets lined with blooming flower pots and historic stone buildings.
Known for its well-preserved Roman walls and ancient gates, Spello also boasts treasures like the frescoes by Pinturicchio in the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, which are considered some of Umbria’s finest Renaissance art.

How many days to see Assisi
Most people visit Assisi as part of their road trip around Umbria or as a day trip from Perugia. I personally thought Assisi was one of the most beautiful places that we visited during our time here.
