Tucked away in the heart of Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland, this trail is a magical mix of forest paths, dramatic rock formations, and peaceful streams that twist and turn through a landscape that feels untouched by time.
The trail starts with a steep incline to a picturesque wooden hut in the forest and has a couple of mild stream crossings. But nothing too tricky and our feet stayed dry the entire time! By hiking it this way you also save the best for last which is the famous Schiessentümpel waterfall.
Unfortunately part of the hiking trail was closed off for maintenance so we couldn’t hike along the wooden boardwalk that leads to the Kallektuffquell. Luckily the diversion was only short and we were still able to visit the turquoise colored spring through some steps.
💡 TIP – If you’re traveling with kids, there’s a nice playground for both toddlers and older children.

If you’re after a hike that combines sweeping lake views and peaceful forest paths, the Kaundorf Loop in Esch-sur-Sûre is an absolute must. This lollypop trail winds its way through the Upper Sûre Nature Park, one of Luxembourg’s most beautiful regions.
Along the way, you’ll find several viewpoints overlooking the lake, each one more breathtaking than the last. My favourite part? The stretch that follows the ridge above the reservoir — especially in autumn, when the forest explodes in shades of gold and orange.
💡 TIP – If you’re not in the mood for a longer hike and want the best view in the shortest time then simply stick to the circular part of the trail since the parking lot is actually in the middle of the hiking trail. The first part leads you straight to the best viewpoint over the lake!

The climb up from the village can be a little steep at first, but once you reach the ridge, you’ll be treated to sweeping vistas that make you forget the effort in an instant. My favourite part? Standing at the lookout point just above the village — you get a postcard-perfect view of the river curling around Esch-sur-Sûre, with its tiny stone houses nestled beneath the ancient castle ruins. Pure magic!
This trail is ideal if you’re looking for a moderate hike that mixes nature, history, and incredible scenery.
If you don’t feel like hiking the entire trail you can also cut it in half since halfway through you end up back in the center of town.

Clervaux is one of those villages that feels like it’s been lifted straight from a fairytale. The heart of the village is crowned by Clervaux Castle, a gleaming white fortress that dates back to the 12th century and now houses a few fascinating museums — including the world-famous Family of Man photography exhibition. Just below, cobblestone streets wind past cozy cafés, stone bridges, and charming old houses that make every corner feel like a postcard.

The best time to go hiking in Luxembourg
Hiking in Luxembourg is a treat in every season, but the best time to hit the trails is between April and October, when nature is at its most vibrant. In spring, the forests and valleys burst into colour with wildflowers, waterfalls are at their fullest, and mild temperatures make it perfect for long, easy hikes. Summer brings warm, sunny days and endless daylight, ideal for exploring deeper trails — though popular spots like the Mullerthal can get a little busier.
If you prefer peaceful paths and magical scenery, autumn is the ultimate time to go hiking in Luxembourg. The forests turn golden, the air is crisp, and every viewpoint feels even more breathtaking. Winter, while colder and muddier, still offers quiet charm — especially for shorter walks near castles or lakes wrapped in frost. But if you want that perfect mix of comfort, colour, and tranquility, autumn is when Luxembourg truly shines.

Essential tips for hiking in Luxembourg
Wear proper hiking shoes – Trails in Luxembourg can be rocky, muddy, or steep in parts, so good grip is key. You don’t need heavy boots, but something sturdy and waterproof makes a huge difference.
Use the free public transport – Getting around couldn’t be easier — all buses, trains, and trams in Luxembourg are completely free! It’s perfect for planning one-way hikes or hopping between regions without worrying about parking.
Be prepared for changing weather – Luxembourg’s weather can shift quickly, especially in spring and autumn. Dress in layers and always pack a lightweight rain jacket — just in case the clouds decide to join your hike.
Respect nature and stay on the trails – Luxembourg’s landscapes are pristine and well-maintained — let’s keep them that way! Stick to marked paths, take your litter with you, and leave no trace behind.
Bring enough water and snacks – While many trails pass through villages, some routes (especially in the north) can feel wonderfully wild. Carry water and a few snacks to keep your energy up for those castle climbs and forest paths.

Where to stay in Luxembourg
If you’re visiting Luxembourg and looking for where to stay, EuroParcs Kohnenhof is a clear winner — and here’s why it stands out. Nestled in the heart of the Our Valley in the Luxembourg Ardennes, the park sits right on the meandering river Our (that natural border with Germany), giving you instant access to one of Europe’s loveliest hiking and nature-rich regions.
What I especially love is how it balances nature with comfort. You’ll find modern, well-appointed holiday homes and cabins tucked into the forest. On top of that, the location is perfect for day-hikes in places like Clervaux and the nearby Ardennes hills, or visiting the castles in the region.
Every chalet comes with its own kitchen but there’s also a small shop on the property, as well as a snack bar and a nice restaurant right next to it. Every day you can also order breakfast for the following morning.
