Interesting facts about the Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço Hike
The Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço hike, also known as PR8, is one of Madeira’s most distinctive and scenic trails, offering a vivid glimpse into the natural beauty of the island. Here are some interesting facts about this remarkable hike:
Unlike much of Madeira, which is lush and green, the Ponta de São Lourenço area features a stark, almost desert-like landscape. This arid, volcanic terrain is punctuated by dramatic cliffs, unique rock formations, and sparse vegetation, providing a stark contrast to the rest of the island.

Despite the arid conditions, the area is a biodiversity hotspot, especially renowned for its unique flora. It hosts several endemic species that are adapted to the harsh, windy conditions, including the rare and protected Madeira rockspurge and the striking ice plant, which add bursts of color to the rocky landscape.
The trail offers panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, with the northern and southern coasts of Madeira visible from various points. On clear days, you can also see the nearby Desertas Islands and even Porto Santo Island in the distance.
Ponta de São Lourenço is part of the Madeira Natural Park and is designated as a partial nature reserve. The protection efforts aim to preserve its unique geological features and the diverse flora and fauna.

The Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço – A step y step guide
The PR8 Ponta de São Lourenço is an easy to moderate hike. There hike is dotted with ascends and descends but none of which are too strenuous. The only steep part is completely at the end to hike up to the viewpoint Miradouro Ponta do Furado.
The trail moves along the cliffs but you’ll always find fences or steel cables to hold onto so it’s never dangerous. Do know that Ponta de São Lourenço is one of the windiest places on Madeira.
💡 TIP – Viewpoints that you can’t miss along the way are: Miradouro de São Lourenço and Ponta do Castelo.

After about 3km you’ll encounter a small restaurant where you can drink or eat something. However, during our visit in March it was closed. Right after the restaurant you can hike up to the final viewpoint called Miradouro Ponta do Furado. It’s a steep climb up but so damn worth the views! You’ll be greeted with a dramatic view over the rugged coastline of Madeira and on a clear day you can even see the neighboring island of Porto Santo.

And if the hike there wasn’t already impressive enough, the same trail going back is even more spectacular! Cause now you’ll also see the entire island of Madeira in the background.

💡 TIP – Don’t miss out on the two incredible viewpoints of Miradouro da Ponta do Rosto and Miradouro do Caniçal. Both can be reached by car and are two of the best viewpoints in Madeira. They aren’t part of the PR8 but you can easily drive there on the way to the start of the hiking trail. If you’re an early riser I highly recommend watching the sunrise from here.

The best time to hike the PR8 Ponta de São Lourenço
Hiking the PR8 Ponta de São Lourenço in Madeira is best during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) when mild temperatures and less rainfall create ideal conditions for enjoying the vibrant flora and clear views.
While summer offers extended daylight, it can be hot, so early morning starts are recommended to avoid the midday heat. Winter may bring cooler and unpredictable weather, making the trail less crowded but potentially more challenging.
Regardless of when you choose to go, always check the weather forecast and consider hiking on weekdays to avoid crowds, ensuring a more enjoyable experience on this stunning coastal trail.
💡 TIP – This hike is at its most stunning when done during sunrise. Since the PR8 Ponta de São Lourenço is located in the East of Madeira you’ll have a front row view to the sunrise this way and you’ll get to enjoy it without the crowds.

Extra tips for hiking the PR8 Ponta de São Lourenço
- Make sure to always wear proper hiking shoes when you go hiking in Madeira. Wether these are trail shoes or more mountaineering shoes like I’m wearing, the choice is yours. Just make sure they have enough grip.
- Download the WalkMe app from Madeira. This is a very insightful app that contains a lot of information on pretty much all of the most well known trails. The app requires a one time purchase of €4.95 which is pretty cheap since you’ll have a map of all of the most beautiful hiking trails in Madeira in your hand.

Where to stay on Madeira
I chose Funchal as a base the first time because of its proximity to the airport. I had a wonderful stay at Sé Boutique Hotel and you can read my full hotel review here. There is a parking lot located only 5 minutes walking from the hotel (parking is €7/day if you validate your card at the hotel reception).
Now for our second trip to Madeira I wanted to stay on the other side of the island so we stayed close to Santana at Quinta das Hortênsias.
