The Vereda do Larano Coastal Trail in Madeira is a stunning hike that offers breathtaking views of the island’s rugged coastline. This trail, often described as one of the most scenic hikes in Madeira, starts in the village of Machico and follows a cliffside path towards Porto da Cruz. It’s about 12 kilometers long and features panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, with sheer cliffs dropping dramatically into the sea.
The original Vereda do Larano is a point to point hike which means that you either have to hike the entire way back, adding another 12km. Or you need a second car at the end of the trail or take a taxi back to where you parked your car in the beginning.
But what if I told you there was another way of hiking the Vereda do Larano, which doesn’t require any of that? And it includes the best parts of the trail?!
We started our hike in Porto da Cruz and followed the trail until the Boca do Risco viewpoint. After that we simply returned the same way that we came making the hike a total of 13km.
All in all it was the perfect way to start off our Madeira travel itinerary after having just landed on the island an hour before.
If you’ve read any of my other travel guides you know that I love traveling as efficiently as possible! after all, not all of us have an endless amount of vacation days.

Vereda Do Larano to Boca do Risco Hiking Stats
Hiking Distance – 13km
Average time – 4 hours
Inclination – 241m
Route Type – Point to point hike. This means that if you want to end up at your car you’ll need to walk the entire trail back, take a taxi, have a second car waiting or you cut the trail in half like we did. We started our hike in Porto da Cruz and followed the trail until the Boca do Risco viewpoint. After relaxing a little and taking in the views we turned around and hiked back to our car. This way the total hiking distance was also 13km.
Difficulty Level – Easy to moderate. There’s almost no elevation gain on the entire trail. The only thing you need to know is that the hiking trail can be narrow at times and you’re walking alongside the cliff. At times there’s a railing to hold onto. But the trail is well maintained and at no time did I ever feel unsafe.
Parking Lot – Teleférico da Fajã do Larano

How to reach the Vereda Do Larano hiking trail
To reach the Vereda do Larano hiking trail in Madeira, you’ll start from the village of Machico, which is easily accessible from various parts of the island. Here’s how you can get there:
By Car
If you have a rental car, you can drive to Machico, which is about 25 minutes east of Funchal, the capital of Madeira. There is parking available in Machico, from where you can start the hike. Use a GPS or a map app to navigate to Machico, and from there, follow local signs pointing towards the trailhead.
🅿️ PARKING – Teleférico da Fajã do Larano
🚗 You can grab your rental car from SunnyCars for the best experience. The biggest tip I can give you is to choose an automatic cause the roads on Madeira can be very steep!
By Bus
Buses run regularly from Funchal to Machico. You can catch buses from the main bus station in Funchal, and the ride takes approximately 40 minutes. Once in Machico, you can start the trail from the western end of the town, and signs or local information can guide you to the trailhead.
Guided Tour
Several companies in Madeira offer guided hikes to Vereda do Larano. This option can be advantageous as it includes transportation from your hotel to the trail and back, along with the guidance of an experienced local who knows the trail well.
Once you arrive in Machico, the trailhead is located near the eastern side of the town. The route is well-marked, but it’s a good idea to carry a map or a GPS-enabled device to ensure you stay on the correct path. The trail ends in Porto da Cruz, where you can take public transportation back to Machico or Funchal, or arrange for a pickup if you’re on a guided tour.

Vereda Do Larano to Boca do Risco Hike – A step by step guide
The trail to Boda do Risco starts right outside of Porto da Cruz. There isn’t too much parking space but this is one of the less frequented trails on Madeira so even in the afternoon you can find a parking spot.
You can park your car at Teleférico da Fajã do Larano or even drive a little further on the dirt road and find a spot on the side of the road.
The hike to Boca do Risco is an easy trail that is mostly flat besides a couple of stairs. The only thing you have to know that it might not be an ideal hike if you have a fear of heights. The trail follows the cliffside and there aren’t always cables in place.

The hike to Boca do Risco follows the Vereda do Larano. But the viewpoint itself isn’t that spectacular. This hike is more about the journey towards the viewpoint than that particular spot itself. Along the way you’ll encounter a lot of beautiful flowers and you can enjoy the lush vegetation and endemic plants that are so typical for Madeira.

Once you reach the viewpoint you can also continue the Vereda do Larana all the way to Machico. However this means you have to fix transportation all the way back to the start of the hiking trail. That’s also why we decided to simply turn back to our car after reaching Boca do Risco.
💡 TIP – After arriving back to your car you can drive down to Porto da Cruz and enjoy a fresh beer and some delicacies from Madeira.

The best time to hike to Boca do Risco
The best time to hike to Boca do Risco, which is part of the Vereda do Larano trail in Madeira, is during the spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November). These seasons offer several advantages:
- Mild Weather – Both spring and autumn provide mild temperatures and less humidity compared to the summer months. Madeira can get quite warm in the summer, and since parts of the trail are exposed with little shade, cooler temperatures make the hike more comfortable.
- Clear Views – Spring and autumn are likely to offer clearer days with less fog or mist, which can obscure the stunning views along the coast that Boca do Risco is famous for.
- Avoiding Crowds – By hiking in these shoulder seasons, you can avoid the peak tourist crowds that are common in the summer, particularly from June through August. This makes for a quieter and more enjoyable hiking experience.
- Flora in Bloom – Especially during the spring, you’ll find many of Madeira’s native plants in bloom, adding to the scenic beauty of the hike.

Where to stay on Madeira
I chose Funchal as a base the first time because of its proximity to the airport. I had a wonderful stay at Sé Boutique Hotel and you can read my full hotel review here. There is a parking lot located only 5 minutes walking from the hotel (parking is €7/day if you validate your card at the hotel reception).
Now for our second trip to Madeira I wanted to stay on the other side of the island so we stayed close to Santana at Quinta das Hortênsias.
