These trails in Cape Town are some of the very first hikes that I ever did. Especially when it comes to writing this blog. Back then I thought I had to wear a dress to take beautiful photos while hiking. This was also due to the fact that I was very self conscious and considered myself not skinny enough to pose in leggings. Thank god I grew out of this stage.
So no, I don’t recommend hiking in a dress at all :p. But it is what it is and I still wanted to share these incredible hikes in Cape Town with you!

The best time to go hiking in Cape Town
The best time to go hiking in Cape Town is during the spring and autumn months, from September to November and March to May. During these periods, the weather is generally mild and pleasant, with lower chances of rain and moderate temperatures, making it ideal for outdoor activities.
Spring (September to November)
- Weather: Springtime brings warmer temperatures, clear skies, and blooming wildflowers, adding vibrant colors to the landscape.
- Advantages: The flora is at its most beautiful, especially in areas like Table Mountain and Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. The trails are less crowded compared to the summer peak season.
Autumn (March to May)
- Weather: Autumn offers stable weather with cooler temperatures, perfect for longer hikes without the intense heat of summer.
- Advantages: The trails are quieter, providing a more serene hiking experience. The sunsets are spectacular, offering breathtaking views from various summits.
Considerations
- Summer (December to February): While summer provides long daylight hours and clear skies, it can be very hot, especially during midday. It’s best to hike early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat.
- Winter (June to August): Winter is the rainy season in Cape Town, bringing cooler temperatures and the possibility of strong winds and wet, slippery trails. However, on clear days, the cooler weather can be refreshing and the trails less crowded.
By choosing the right season and time of day, hikers can enjoy Cape Town’s stunning landscapes and diverse trails to the fullest, ensuring a safe and memorable outdoor adventure.

The 3 bucket list hiking trails in Cape Town
1. Lion’s Head hiking trail
Distance – 5.5km
Duration – 2.5 hours
Elevation – 669m
Route Type – Out & Back
Difficulty – Moderate. The climb gets pretty steep and at some point you have to use ladders and metal bars that are attached to the rocks to hoist yourself up.
Best time to hike – Early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and enjoy cooler temperatures. Sunrise and sunset hikes are particularly spectacular.
Starting point – Lion’s Head parking lot
What to bring – Enough water, your camera, flashlight to climb down in the dark.

Hiking the Lion’s Head trail in Cape Town offers a moderately challenging yet incredibly rewarding experience, marked by its breathtaking 360-degree views of the city, Table Mountain, and the Atlantic Ocean.
The trail begins at the Signal Hill Road parking area and initially follows a wide, well-maintained gravel path. As you ascend, the path narrows and the terrain becomes rockier, requiring some light scrambling. Metal chains and staples embedded in the rocks provide assistance at steeper sections, adding a sense of adventure to the hike. The trail spirals around the mountain, allowing you to enjoy panoramic vistas from various angles.

2. Kasteelpoort Trail
Distance – 6km
Duration – 3 to 4 hours depending on your fitness level
Elevation – 700m
Route Type – Out & back
Difficulty – Moderate to challenging
Best time to hike – Start hiking in the early morning to enjoy the shade on the trail as much as possible.
Starting Point – Pipe Track above Camps Bay

The Kasteelpoort Trail is a well-loved hiking route on Table Mountain in Cape Town, offering a challenging and scenic ascent that rewards hikers with breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, Camps Bay, and the surrounding mountains. Starting from the Pipe Track above Camps Bay, the trail begins with a gentle incline before becoming steeper and more rugged as it ascends through lush fynbos and rocky terrain.
As you near the top of the Kasteelpoort Trail, the path involves some scrambling over rocks, which adds an element of adventure to the hike. Once at the summit, you are greeted with expansive views of the Table Mountain plateau, the city below, and the distant Robben Island.
The trail connects with the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway and other routes, allowing for a variety of hiking options and further exploration of Table Mountain.

3. Devil’s Peak
Distance – 6km
Duration – 2 hours
Elevation – 450m
Difficulty – Easy
Route Type – Out & Back
Starting point – The start of the Devil’s Peak hike is located on the other side of the cable car and can be found here. There are plenty of parking possibilities.
Best time to hike – I would prefer hiking in the morning cause especially in the summer it can get really hot in Cape Town.
💡 TIP – When I did this hike it had rained a lot the day before and for some reason this trail was crawling with ants. They were in a clear state of panic and were all over the place including my shoes and then of course legs. So just keep that in mind when you are planning your hike.

Devil’s Peak is one of Cape Town’s iconic mountains, offering a challenging yet rewarding hike with spectacular views of the city, Table Mountain, and the surrounding areas. The hike can start from various points, but two popular starting points are Tafelberg Road, near the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, and the Newlands Forest parking area.

How to get around Cape Town
Navigating Cape Town is convenient with several transportation options tailored to different needs. Renting a car provides the greatest flexibility for exploring both the city and surrounding attractions like the Cape Winelands and Cape Point.
🚗 You can grab your rental car from SunnyCars for the best experience. The biggest tip I can give you is to choose an automatic cause the roads on Madeira can be very steep!
For those preferring public transportation, the MyCiTi bus service offers efficient and affordable travel across major routes, including the airport, city center, and suburbs.
Ride-sharing services like Uber and Bolt are widely available, providing safe and reasonably priced rides. Additionally, metered taxis and minibus taxis offer alternative ways to get around, though the latter can be crowded and less predictable.
For shorter distances and eco-friendly travel, bicycles and e-bikes can be rented from various shops, especially useful around the waterfront and promenades. Walking is ideal in well-populated areas like the city center and the V&A Waterfront.
