- Must visit places – The Alhambra, Mirador de San Nicolás, Granada Cathedral and Carmen de la Victoria.
- Best restaurant – Have dinner with a view at Restaurante Carmen De Aben Humeya

What is the Alhambra Palace in Granada
The Alhambra in Granada, Spain, is a stunning and expansive fortress-palace complex that stands as a testament to the architectural and cultural magnificence of the Nasrid dynasty, the last Muslim rulers of Spain.
Nestled atop the Darro Valley with the Sierra Nevada as its backdrop, the Alhambra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its intricate Islamic art, lush gardens, and the harmonious blend of architectural styles that span centuries.

The complex includes the ornate Nasrid Palaces, with their exquisite tilework and stucco decorations, the robust Alcazaba fortress offering panoramic views, and the Generalife, a summer palace with beautifully landscaped gardens.
The Alhambra is not just an architectural marvel but also a symbol of the rich historical tapestry of Al-Andalus, reflecting the confluence of cultures that have shaped Andalusia over the millennia.

Tips for visiting Alhambra Palace
Visiting the Alhambra is a highlight of any trip to Granada, Spain. To make the most of your visit, consider these tips:
Book Tickets in Advance – The Alhambra has limited daily visitor numbers (up to 8000 people/day), so it’s crucial to book your tickets well in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons.
Choose the Right Ticket – Several ticket options are available, including general admission, night visits, and garden-only tickets. Decide what you want to see ahead of time and choose accordingly.
💡 TIP – I highly recommend booking tickets for both the Generalife and Nasrid Palaces. If you miss out on these places you haven’t actually seen Alhambra.

Plan Your Visit Early or Late in the Day – To avoid the crowds and enjoy cooler temperatures, plan to visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon. I made the mistake of booking tickets only 2 weeks in advance so the only time slot that was left was at noon. To say it was super crowded is an understatement.
Allow Enough Time – The Alhambra complex is vast, with much to see. Allocate at least half a day for your visit, though a full day allows a more relaxed pace to explore thoroughly.
💡 TIP – If you’re visiting Alhambra as part of a day trip like we did I recommend visiting the palace in the early morning so you have the rest of the day to explore the centre of Granada.

Wear Comfortable Shoes – The Alhambra’s terrain is uneven in places, and there’s a lot of walking involved, so comfortable footwear is essential.
Bring Water and Snacks -There are limited food services within the Alhambra, so bring water and some snacks, especially during the hot summer months.

❗️Don’t Miss the Nasrid Palaces – These palaces are often considered the highlight of the Alhambra, with their intricate Islamic art and architecture. Entry times are strictly regulated, so ensure you know your allocated time slot.
Explore the Generalife – The Generalife gardens and summer palace offer a tranquil escape with beautiful flowers, fountains, and views back to the Alhambra.
Consider a Guided Tour – For a deeper understanding of the Alhambra’s history and architecture, consider joining a guided tour.

How to get to Alhambra Palace
Reaching the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, is straightforward, whether you’re coming from within the city or traveling from further afield:
From Granada City Center
On Foot – If you’re up for a bit of a walk and want to soak in the city’s atmosphere, the Alhambra is about a 20-minute uphill walk from the city center. Follow the signs leading to the Alhambra from Plaza Nueva.
By Bus – Take the C30 or C32 minibus from Plaza Isabel La Católica. These minibuses are specially designed to navigate Granada’s narrow streets and take you directly to the Alhambra entrance.
By Taxi – Taxis are readily available throughout Granada and can take you directly to the Alhambra. This is a convenient option if you’re short on time or prefer not to walk or take the bus.
From Granada Bus or Train Station
If you’re arriving in Granada by bus or train, you can catch a city bus or taxi from the station to the city center, where you can then follow the options mentioned above to reach the Alhambra.
By Car
The Alhambra has its own parking lot and if you arrive before 11am you can be pretty certain of scoring a parking spot. We arrived around 10.30am during the Easter holidays and only P1 was full. There was still plenty of parking space at P2, P3 and P4.
💡 TIP – If you also want to explore Granada after your visit to Alhambra, I highly recommend going on foot and leaving your car at the Alhambra parking lot. It would take a lot longer to pick up your car, drive to the historic center and then find another parking spot.
Regardless of how you choose to get there, arriving early in the morning can help you beat the crowds, especially during high season. Also, remember to wear comfortable shoes, as there’s plenty of walking involved once you’re inside the Alhambra complex.

Here are the approximate driving distances and average driving times from nearby cities in Spain to the Alhambra in Granada:
- From Málaga – About 132 kilometers (approximately 82 miles), with an average driving time of around 1.5 hours.
- From Seville – Roughly 250 kilometers (about 155 miles), taking around 2.5 hours to drive.
- From Córdoba – The distance is about 200 kilometers (around 124 miles), with an estimated driving time of 2 hours.
- From Jaén – Around 100 kilometers (about 62 miles) away, with a driving time of approximately 1.25 hours.
- From Marbella – About 180 kilometers (112 miles), with an average driving time of around 2 hours.

Tips for visiting Alhambra Palace with a baby
We visited Alhambra Palace with César when he was 7 months old. Since I was a little late with booking tickets the only option that was left was a guided tour that would take 3 to 4 hours. To say we were a little nervous was an understatement!
We decided it would be best to arrive at least 1 hour before our tour would start. This way we had plenty of time to give César his veggie puree, put him in a clean diaper and for him to digest his food.
Use a Baby Carrier – The Alhambra’s historic nature means there are uneven surfaces, stairs, and areas where strollers may be impractical. A baby carrier can make navigating these areas easier and keep your hands free. Also a pram isn’t even allowed inside the Nasrid Palaces so a baby carrier is definitely the way to go when visiting Alhambra.
Sun Protection – About 80% of the tour takes place outside and there’s little to no shade. Make sure to bring a sunhat and to put sunscreen on your baby. Cause since you’re using a baby carrier he’ll also be more in the sun.

Getting tickets for Alhambra Palace
The Alhambra Palace in Granada is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Spain together with the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. Everyday 8000 people get to visit this architectural masterpiece. So yes, there is a limit to the amount of day tickets.
I highly recommend booking tickets about 3 months in advance to make sure you can pick the day and time slot of your choosing.
There are several ticket options:
- 🎫 A self guided tour – Ticket price is €19/adult and an audioguide is included in the ticket.
- 🎫 A guided tour – This is the exact tour that we did which was around 4 hours and a max of 15 people. It’s the perfect option if you also want some inside information about Alhambra.
Upon the day of your visit make sure to bring your ID or passport with you cause you’ll need to show it several times during your visit.

Top things to see at Alhambra
The Alhambra in Granada is a sprawling complex with numerous must-see attractions, each rich in history and architectural beauty. Here are the top things to see during your visit:
Nasrid Palaces – The heart of the Alhambra, these palaces are famous for their intricate Islamic art and architecture. Highlights include the Patio de los Leones (Court of the Lions) and the Sala de los Embajadores (Hall of the Ambassadors).

Alcazaba – The oldest part of the Alhambra, this fortress offers panoramic views of Granada and the surrounding areas. Climb the Torre de la Vela for a breathtaking view.

Generalife – The summer palace and gardens, located adjacent to the Alhambra, provide a tranquil escape with beautifully landscaped gardens, flowing water features, and extensive flower beds.

Palacio de Carlos V – A Renaissance building commissioned by Emperor Charles V, this palace is known for its impressive circular courtyard and houses two museums: the Alhambra Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts.
Palacio de los Leones – Another iconic section within the Nasrid Palaces, known for its beautiful courtyard featuring a fountain with twelve lions.

Partal Gardens – Overlooking the Albaicín, these gardens feature ponds, arcades, and the Torre de las Damas, offering a perfect blend of architecture and nature.

Convento de San Francisco – Now the Parador de Granada, this former convent is built on the site of a Nasrid palace and offers a unique blend of Christian and Moorish styles.

Where to stay
If you’re spending a night in Granada I highly recommend staying in the Albaicin region. From here you have the best view over the Alhambra. Imagine waking up and seeing this spectacular place in all its glory first thing in the morning.

Seda Residences – Granada
Seda Residences is a great place to stay in Granada if you want the comfort of an apartment but still be close to all of the main sights. It’s a practical base for exploring the city, especially if you like having a little more space than a regular hotel room. From here, you can easily discover Granada’s old town, wander through the Albaicín, visit the Alhambra, and come back to a calm and comfortable place at the end of the day.
We opted for a different approach for our Andalusia itinerary. We stayed at Hotel La Bobadilla in Villanueva de Tapia to be centered between both Cordoba and Granada, which we we both visited on a day trip.
