7 days in Gran Canaria is the perfect amount of time to visit the highlights of this amazing island. Tour the scenic coastlines in the West, spend several days exploring the most amazing hiking trails, wander through colorful towns and discover some incredible hidden gems.
Why you’ll love this trip
This trip is perfect for families, hikers, and those who love a great road trip. Most your time with this Gran Canaria itinerary will be spend outdoors, either exploring the best natural wonders this island has to offer or roaming through small towns.
The main capital of Las Palmas also has some beautiful architecture but won’t be covered in this itinerary. Instead our focus lies on breathing in as much fresh air as possible and admiring the natural beauty of the island. And with all of the opportunities to be outdoors Gran Canaria is a great place to take the kids.
This Gran Canaria itinerary is designed with 1 main base from where you’ll discover the island.
To get around the island you’ll need to pick up a rental car. I highly recommend doing so as soon as you arrive at the airport.
🚗 Rent a car in Gran Canaria by using SunnyCars. There’s never any hidden costs with them and free cancellation up to 1 hour before rental start. Their price is transparent and everything is included.

Gran Canaria Itinerary – Day 1
Arrive in Gran Canaria
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Airport, code LPA, is named after the Spanish province in which it is located and is 18 km south of the capital city of Las Palmas.
After collecting your bags you can pick up your rental car within the airport terminal.
🚗 Rent a car in Gran Canaria by using SunnyCars. There’s never any hidden costs with them and free cancellation up to 1 hour before rental start. Their price is transparent and everything is included.
After that it’s time to get settled in your hotel and rest up a bit for the days to come.
🏨 Where we stayed – We chose to stay at Paradisus by Meliá Gran Canaria and it was the best decision we could have made. The hotel is located at Playa de San Agustín and boasts incredible ocean views.
My main draw to the hotel was its design and their luxury all inclusive service. Our baby stayed for free and we got a beautiful cot set up for him in our room. There are several restaurants in the hotel but one of the biggest benefits for me was their lavish buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You never know how dinner will go with a baby and with a buffet you have a less strict schedule and can take care of your little one if he needs you.
They had plenty of high chairs for kids and also a kids pool where he could test the water without being too cold in the big swimming pool.
I also loved the driving distance to most attractions so our car time never was too short. This way César could enjoy a good nap in his carseat before embarking on a new adventure.
The hotel also has an adults only section so no angry looks from other people if your baby gets fussy. Not that this should bother you but I know a lot of parents will absolutely love this.

Gran Canaria Itinerary – Day 2
Mirador Astronómico de la Degollada de las Yeguas
Start your day by visiting one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Gran Canaria. The Mirador Astronómico de la Degollada de las Yeguas is one of the best places in Gran Canaria to watch the sunrise.
Perched high up, this spot offers panoramic views that come alive as the first light of day creeps over the horizon, painting the sky in vibrant hues. It’s a peaceful time to be there, with the quiet only broken by the occasional sound of nature waking up.
The early start is worth it for the breathtaking views and the feeling of having the place almost to yourself. It’s a great spot for anyone looking to start their day with a dose of natural beauty or capture some stunning sunrise photos.
Just remember to bring something warm to wear, as it can be quite cool in the early morning.

Puerto de Mogán
Puerto de Mogán in Gran Canaria is the place to be if you’re into charming vibes and picturesque scenes.
Often dubbed “Little Venice” because of its cute canals, this spot blends beach life with a cozy village feel. You can stroll around the marina, check out the colorful buildings, or just kick back at a café and watch the world go by.
It’s also a top pick for seafood lovers, with plenty of fresh catches to choose from. Whether you’re looking to shop, sunbathe, or simply soak up the laid-back atmosphere, Puerto de Mogán has a little something for everyone.

Hiking Route 2 to Charco Azul
Hiking Distance – 7.1km Elevation – 557m Route Type – Loop Duration – 3.5 hours Level – Hard
Hiking Route 2 to Charco Azul in Gran Canaria is a hidden gem for those looking for a bit of adventure mixed with stunning natural beauty. This trail might be a bit off the beaten path, but it’s a fantastic way to experience the diverse landscapes of the island.
We did the loop clockwise and this way the steepest part is the incline which is always a little safer in my opinion. Also, I prefer to get the hardest part over and done with.
During this hike we also had to use our AllTraills app a couple of times to help us navigate.
Once back down you’ll have to follow the GC-200 for a bit until you arrive back at your car.

Gran Canaria Itinerary – Day 3
Mirador del Balcón
Mirador del Balcón is one of those spots in Gran Canaria where you can get a real ‘wow’ moment without much effort. Perched on the west coast, this viewpoint gives you front-row seats to some epic ocean views, with cliffs that dive straight into the sea.

Hike to Charco Azul
Hiking Distance – 2.9km Elevation – 188m Route Type – Out & Back Duration – 1 hour Level – Easy
Charco Azul is a beautiful hidden gem in Gran Canaria that will lead you to a secret oasis in the heart of the Tamadaba Natural Park.
Tucked away in the island’s rugged terrain, this spot is all about the journey and the destination. The trail might challenge you a bit, but it’s totally worth it when you arrive at this stunning natural pool.
I had to open up my AllTrails app a couple of times cause the trails in Gran Canaria aren’t always well marked. But we managed to find the waterfall and its pool rather quickly. Although I would not advise you to go swimming. When we were there the water looked extremely dirty and since it’s a small pool it’s probably filled with bacteria.

Hike to Guayedra Beach
Hiking Distance – 4.6km Elevation – 279m Route Type – Out & Back Duration – 2 hours Level – Moderate
The hike to Guayedra Beach consists of 3 parts. There’s the start of the hike which leaves from Agaete and follows an easy trail with a steady incline. This part of the trail then ends up at the GC-200. For the first part you can walk alongside the road but soon the drop off on the right is too steep so you have to go over the railing and walk along the road itself.
The third part of the trail to Guayedra Beach is a steep incline down the Guayedra ravine. In the beginning there are some railings to help you navigate but for the most part it’s loose volcanic rock so make sure to wear sturdy hiking boots.
On the beach you’ll find some manmade stone walls to take cover from the wind. Unfortunately when we visited the wind was simply too strong so after giving César his bottle we decided to turn back to our car.
💡 TIP – The hiking trail starts in the town of Agaete at the intersection of the GC-200 and the GC-172. This is the exact starting point and you can park your car freely in the street.

Gran Canaria Itinerary – Day 4
Cenobio de Valerón
Cenobio de Valerón is an intriguing archaeological site in Gran Canaria, offering a glimpse into the island’s pre-Hispanic past. This network of caves carved into the cliffs was once used as a granary by the indigenous Canarians.
With over 300 chambers, it’s a fascinating place to explore and imagine what life might have been like centuries ago. The site is well-organized with walkways and information boards, making it accessible for visitors interested in history and culture.
Opening hours – 10am to 5pm. Closed on Monday Entrance fee – €3

Firgas is a quaint town in the northern part of Gran Canaria, often celebrated for its charming water features and picturesque streets.
It’s known for the Paseo de Gran Canaria, a lovely street with a cascading water feature that represents the island’s 21 municipalities with beautiful mosaics. The town offers a cozy, small-town vibe, making it a nice spot for a leisurely walk, especially if you’re looking to experience a quieter side of the island away from the main tourist spots.

Arucas
Arucas is a vibrant town in Gran Canaria that’s well worth a visit, especially for its impressive Gothic-style church that dominates the skyline.
The town has a friendly, local atmosphere, with streets lined with cafes and small shops that invite you to wander and explore. Arucas is also known for its rum distillery, where you can learn about the production process and even sample some of the local spirit.
💡 TIP – Drive up to the Mirador De La Montaña De Arucas for a birds eye view over the town.

Jardín de la Marquesa
Jardín de la Marquesa is a little oasis in Gran Canaria that offers a peaceful escape with its lush gardens and exotic plants. Tucked away in Arucas, this botanical garden is like a green haven, perfect for those looking to enjoy nature’s quiet beauty.
With well-kept paths winding through the diverse flora, it’s a great place for a leisurely stroll or a quiet afternoon away from the hustle and bustle. The garden also features peacocks that roam freely, adding a touch of whimsy to your visit.
Opening hours – Monday to Saturday from 9am to 6pm. Closed on Sunday Entrance fee – €6

Gran Canaria Itinerary – Day 5
Roque Nublo Hike
Hiking Distance – 3.1km Elevation – 187m Route Type – Out & Back Duration – 1.5 hour Level – Easy
Hiking to Roque Nublo is a must-do for anyone visiting Gran Canaria. This iconic rock formation stands majestically in the heart of the island, offering panoramic views that are simply breathtaking.
The trail to the top is well-marked and manageable for most fitness levels, winding through pine forests and rugged landscapes that capture the essence of Gran Canaria’s natural beauty.
Reaching the summit, you’re rewarded with a 360-degree view of the island, from the vast Atlantic Ocean to the distant peaks of Tenerife’s Mount Teide on a clear day.
💡 TIP – Roque Nublo is one of the most famous hiking trails in Gran Canaria and while there is an actual parking lot it’s definitely not big enough for the amount of visitors during the day. We arrived around 10am and scored one of the last spots.

Tejeda
Tejeda in Gran Canaria is a quaint little village that’s got a lot of charm packed into its narrow streets. Nestled right in the heart of the island, it’s surrounded by some pretty stunning nature, making it a great spot for anyone looking to explore the great outdoors or just enjoy some peace and quiet.
The village itself is pretty laid-back, with a few local shops and eateries where you can grab a bite and soak in the local vibe. It’s known for its almond trees, so if you’re around during the blooming season, you’re in for a treat.

Pico de las Nieves
Pico de las Nieves stands as Gran Canaria’s highest peak, offering a cool escape with some of the best views on the island. It’s the kind of place where you can see for miles on a clear day, with a panorama that stretches from the rugged inland mountains right out to the ocean.
The drive up is part of the adventure, winding through some scenic spots that are worth a pause. Once you’re at the top, there’s a sense of being on top of the world, making it a great spot for those who love to chase those high-up, expansive views.

Mirador de Fataga
It’s a great pit stop if you’re exploring the island, offering a moment to stretch your legs and maybe snap a few pics.
Perched up high, this lookout spot gives you a panoramic peek at the valley below, with its patchwork of palm trees, quaint houses, and winding roads.

Gran Canaria Itinerary – Day 6
Hike to Barranco de Las Vacas
Hiking Distance – 850m Elevation – 30m Route Type – Out & Back Duration – 30 minutes Level – Easy
The hiking trail to the Barranco de las Vacas starts right next to the GC-550 and you can clearly see it if you put Google Maps into satellite mode. The trail goes down into the ravine at a steady incline but it’s a gravel path with some loose rocks here and there so make sure to wear good trainers or hiking boots.
At the turn off go to the right and go over the small stone wall using the stairs on the side of it. You’ll continue through the ravine a little more and go through a tunnel underneath the viaduct. After a short walk you’ll enter the canyon.
The Barranco de las Vacas is a very short canyon. This is also one of the main reasons why you should visit early. It can get pretty crowded during the day and due to the limited amount of space it would be nearly impossible to take some nice photos.
💡 TIP – There are only 2 parking spaces next to the start of the hiking trail right here. Don’t use the pin for Barranco de Las Vacas on Google Maps cause the start of trail is located on the other side of the road which I linked above. If that space is full there ‘s some more spots next tot the road a little further down the road.

Hike the Caldera de Bandama
Hiking Distance – 3.5km Elevation – 211m Route Type – Loop Duration – 1.5 hour Level – Easy to Moderate
This massive volcanic crater, with its impressive 1-kilometer diameter, offers a unique circular trail that takes you through a variety of landscapes.
As you navigate the rim and perhaps venture down into the crater itself, you’ll be treated to stunning panoramic views of the island and the Atlantic Ocean beyond.
The area is a haven for geology enthusiasts and nature lovers alike, with its rich flora and intriguing volcanic formations.
💡 TIP – Make sure to also stop at the Pico De Bandama from where you’ll have a birds eye view over the crater.

El Bufadero
El Bufadero is a natural wonder on the coast of Gran Canaria that’s like nature’s own version of a water show. It’s basically a series of rock formations with holes that shoot water up into the air when the waves come crashing in, kind of like a geyser.
The best time to see it in action is when the tide is just right, so it’s a good idea to check the tide times before you go. It’s a cool spot for those who love to watch the power of the ocean and snap some unique photos. Just be sure to keep a safe distance, as those waves can be unpredictable.

Gran Canaria Itinerary – Day 7
Dunes of Maspalomas
The dunes of Maspalomas in Gran Canaria are a spectacular natural attraction that feels like a mini-desert right next to the sea. Stretching out for kilometers, these golden sands offer a unique landscape that’s perfect for a leisurely walk or just to sit and watch the sunset.
The dunes change shape with the wind, so the scenery is always a bit different each time you visit. It’s a popular spot, but there’s plenty of space for everyone to find their own quiet corner.
All in all, this is the perfect place to spend your last sunrise!

Fly Home
Now it’s time to fly home or for those of you who have more days available, time to explore another Canarian island such as Tenerife.
