There are places in this world that, once you see them, make your jaw drop. Museo Lagomar is one of them! This enchanting museum is not just a tribute to art and architecture but a celebration of imagination and mystery.
Once the home of actor Omar Sharif, who allegedly lost it in a card game shortly after buying it, Lagomar is a labyrinth of caves, tunnels, and gardens that seem to spring from the pages of a fantasy novel.
The museum’s sinuous white walls and volcanic rock blend seamlessly with lush greenery and tranquil water features, creating an oasis that feels otherworldly.
I could have spend hours here, exploring every nook and cranny. And I probably took about 200 photos in less than 1 hour. So without further ado I’ll tell you every little thing you need to know before visiting the most special museum in Lanzarote!

Who designed Museo Lagomar
Museo Lagomar in Lanzarote was designed by the artist and architect César Manrique, in collaboration with Jesús Soto. The design is characteristic of Manrique’s style, which often blends architecture seamlessly with the natural environment, using the island’s volcanic landscapes to dramatic effect.
The museum reflects this ethos, incorporating local materials and respecting the unique topography of the site. The result is a space that feels both organic and artistically innovative, showcasing Manrique’s vision of integrating art, architecture, and nature.
César Manrique was profoundly influenced by various modern artists and movements, but some of the most significant inspirations in his work were from Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, and the surrealists.

The best time to visit Museo Lagomar
The best time to visit Museo Lagomar is during the off-peak tourist seasons in Lanzarote, which are generally in the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these periods, the weather is still pleasant, and there are fewer tourists.
Visiting during the early morning or late afternoon can also enhance your experience, as the light and shadows play beautifully with the architecture and natural features of Museo Lagomar, enhancing its visual appeal. Additionally, these times typically avoid the midday sun, which can be quite strong in Lanzarote, making your visit more comfortable.
We arrived right at opening time and had a really good time exploring every corner of this beautiful place. Especially if you want to take beautiful photos without all too many other people in it I advise you to come as soon as it opens or 1 hour before closing time.

Things to know before visiting Museo Lagomar
Museo Lagomar is not wheelchair or buggy friendly
There’s a ton of stairs at Museo Lagomar so if you’re traveling with a baby make sure to bring his babycarrier. You’ll not be able to take his/hers buggy inside. At one point there’s even stepping stones across water, something you really don’t want to cross with a buggy cause everybody would end up in the water.
Due to its natural and uneven terrain, some parts of the museum may not be fully accessible to those with mobility issues. Check in advance if you require special accommodations.
It’s an open air museum
The sun can shine pretty brutally on Lanzarote so make sure to bring that sunscreen and make sure to have some water with you. Museo Lagomar also has a bar at the main pool which opens as soon as the museum itself opens. So if needed, you can always get a refreshment there.

Where to stay on Lanzarote
Lanzarote is a rather smaller island compared to Tenerife or Gran Canaria, so on average the driving distances will be a lot shorter. We decided to base ourselves in the centre of the island so most of the time we never had to drive more than 30 minutes.
Ever since César sleeps in his own room we prefer to stay at an appartement so we also have some time to ourselves in the evening.
I bumped into the gorgeous 🏨 Alava Suites, which have the feeling of a small boutique hotel. I opted for their deluxe appartement which also came with a private terrace. Breakfast is included and was different and delicious every single morning. For our dinner we had our own kitchen to cook something simple.
The property also comes with a fitness and a shared swimming pool.
