Oeschinensee Panorama Trail Hiking Stats
Hiking Distance – 8.7km (5.4 miles)
Elevation – 490m (1607 feet)
Route Type – Loop
Duration – 3.5 hours
Level – Moderate. The Panorama Trail at Oeschinen Lake requires a good fitness level due to its elevation gain. My advise is to start with the left part of the trail that goes straight up to Heuberg. This way you’ll tackle the hardest part of the hike at the start and your total amount of elevation will be less than the other way around. The hike is a bit technical in some parts but doesn’t require any scrambling.
Parking Lot – There’s a parking lot at the cable car station in Kandersteg. I recommend arriving at opening time to make sure you can secure yourself a parking space and that you’re one of the first ones up the mountain.
Best time to visit – Oeschinensee has become extremely popular due to Social Media. I recommend taking the first cable car up from Kandersteg at 8.30am and start your hike by going up the panoramic trail on the left. We did it this way and had the iconic view for us alone for nearly an hour.

Interesting facts about Oeschinensee in Switzerland
This pristine lake owes its existence to glacial activities, marking it as a quintessential mountain lake formed during the last Ice Age.
It’s part of the esteemed Jungfrau-Aletsch Protected Area, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, highlighting its global natural importance.
Perched at an impressive altitude of about 1,578 meters (5,177 feet), Oeschinensee offers awe-inspiring views of the towering Blüemlisalp Massif among other peaks. The lake undergoes a magical transformation with the seasons: freezing over in winter to create a playground for ice fishing and skating, and revealing its crystal-clear turquoise waters in summer, ideal for rowing or soaking in the tranquil beauty.

How to get to Oeschinensee
Getting to Oeschinensee, the stunning alpine lake in Switzerland, involves a few straightforward steps:
- Start from Kandersteg: Your journey to Oeschinensee begins in the charming town of Kandersteg, accessible by train from major Swiss cities like Bern and Interlaken.
- Take the Cable Car: From Kandersteg, hop on the Oeschinensee cable car, which will whisk you up the mountainside to the upper station, offering scenic views along the way. Return ticket for the gondola: 32 CHF for adults and 16 CHF for kids of 6 and older. Here you can find the most up to date info regarding opening times and rates.
💡 TIP – If you get the SWISS TRAVEL PASS you only pay half the price of the cable car.
- Enjoy a Scenic Hike: Once you disembark from the cable car, you’re treated to a choice of paths. The lake is a leisurely 20 to 30-minute walk away, with trails that are well-marked and suitable for most fitness levels. There’s also a small electric bus that runs from the gondola station straight to the lake but it’s ‘s pretty expensive so we skipped doing this.
- Alternative Routes: For those seeking a bit more adventure, there are longer hiking routes that start directly from Kandersteg and wind their way up to the lake, offering a more immersive natural experience. Do know that the hike up is pretty steep. I honestly don’t recommend doing this and instead save your breath for the Oeschinensee Panorama Trail.

How to hike the Oeschinensee Panorama Trail: Step-By-Step Trail Guide
When starting from the top of the Kandersteg cable car station my advice would be to hike the Oeschinensee Panorama hike clockwise. This way you get the steepest climb over and done with and the descent down to the lake will be less brutal on the knees.
Kandersteg – Läger
When walking towards the lake follow the trail signs that point to Läger, also known as trail number of 2.
After about 10 minutes follow the path on the left from where the uphill section through the trees will start. It’s a steep climb up and the path can be slippery at times so make sure to wear proper hiking shoes.
That being said, I completed this hike when I was 32 weeks pregnant with César, so if I can reach the top, so can you!
At the hiking sign showing “Heuberg -Oberbärgli” you will get off the path to the left and start the circular panorama hike.
As you can see from my photos below, the weather wasn’t in our favor at the start of the hike. The mountain ranges behind the lake were covered most of the time during our hike up.

Heuberg -Oberbärgli
Now this is where the trail gets more and more beautiful with every step that you take. And it’s also where you reach the highest point of the Oeschinensee Panorama hike.
Along the way you’ll come across the “official” viewpoint over Oeschinensee, also known as the Instagram hotspot. In the past years this wonderful photography spot has seen an enormous increase in popularity.
💡 TIP – If you want a quiet experience make sure to take the first cable car up from Kandersteg. This is what we did and we were able to enjoy this incredible place for nearly an hour.

This was by far my favorite part of the hiking trail. The turquoise lake was glistening below and as we continued on the trail we saw several waterfalls on our left. The path now also becomes wider and you’re done with hiking uphill. You’ll also cross a small alpine restaurant, Berghaus Oberbärgli, where you can get some snacks or drinks.
💡 TIP – Berghaus Oberbärgli only accepts payment by cash.

From here you can either hike back to the Oeschinensee shore or you can keep on hiking up to the Blüemlisalphütte SAC. It’s another 3.6km ascent but you can stay overnight in this hut. You do have to book in advance if you wish to do so.
Since I was 32 weeks pregnant at the time we decided to simply hike back to the shore. It’s a slow descent but the path consists of gravel and loose rocks so you do have to be careful not to glide.

The Oeschinensee Panorama Trail is best hiked from late spring to early autumn, typically from June to October.
