5 Best Places To Visit In Hungary

This vibrant city doesn’t need an introduction anymore. Over the past years this city has gotten so popular with tourists that you can’t open up Instagram without any of it’s landmarks popping up onto your screen.

When visiting you definitely don’t need to rent out a car, the heart of the city is only a short train ride away from the airport and public transport goes 24/7. Just make sure to always buy a ticket and most importantly to validate your ticket when you step onto the tram, metro or bus. They really don’t mess around and you can get fined up to 8000 HUF on the spot.

So far I have visited Budapest in every season and it’s very hard for me to pick a favourite. During summer you can skip the big crowd simply by walking alongside the Danube in the evening. All the buildings will be lit up as the perfect backdrop for a romantic evening. In wintertime the entire city is decorated with christmas lights and the first christmas stalls with mulled wine start appearing already in november. Hidden away in a forest near Eger you can find this picturesque little town. If you plan on renting out a car in Hungary and if you’re into photography than this is the place for you. From Eger it takes about 90 minutes but the drive itself is an experience on it’s own since most of it is straight through the Bükk National Park. We were even so lucky to spot a deer and a fox on our way back.

Overlooking the town you can find the majestical Palotaszallo, which is now a hotel that captures the fairytale vibe here at it’s best. Even if you are not staying here you can go in and have a look around. Below the hotel you will find the Lillafüred waterfall, the highest in Hungary at 20 metres. My advice here is to not go when the leaves already start to fall cause it actually blocks the waterfall and you can only see a little stream coming down the rocks.

Besides taking the perfect Instagram shot you can also turn on your more adventurous side. Right before you enter the town you will find an enormous adventure park hidden away in the forest where your inner Jane or Tarzan can come to life. Or maybe you prefer exploring one of the three caves here, filled with stalactites and stalagmites. For the best shot of the castle though you need to rent out one of the little boats and go out on the Lake Hamori.

You might get your tongue twisted trying to pronounce this one but you should definitely not confuse it with Miskolc. If I can give you one piece of advice, don’t go there. You will be utterly disappointed. Instead opt for a day at a cave bath in Miskolctapolca. Again only a 60 minutes drive from Eger so go as early as possible to avoid the crowd.

These cave passages were formed during thousands of years. And for the price of only 2500HUF you will have the experience of a lifetime and one unique in Europe. Cause not even in Budapest you will find a thermal bath as special as this one. It holds around 10 different areas and includes a sauna. So make sure to bring your bathing suit, flip-flops and a towel when you are in the area.

Around 90 minutes driving from Budapest you can find the beautiful town of Eger. Perfect for those who want to escape the busy city life of Budapest but still want to enjoy the comfort a small city has to offer.

You can’t start your morning better than enjoying breakfast and a cup of coffee at Depresso Kavéhaz. The view over the historical town square you get for free. The city itself is rather small but serves as the perfect basis to visit a lot of beautiful places in the area like listed above. Eger is best known for it’s red wines, thermal baths and some stunning architecture like a castle, baroque buildings and an Ottoman minaret.

I would advise you to stay here for 4 days since you actually only need 1 day for Eger itself. The rest of your time should be spend visiting the areas around the Bükk National Park: Lillafüred, Miskolctapolca and Szilvasvarad.

Only 1 hour away from Budapest which makes it perfect for a daytrip. It is situated on the right bank of the Danube and holds the biggest basilica of Central Europe. If you walk around it you will find a lookout where you can actually spot the border of Hungary with Slovakia.

Esztergom was the birthplace of the first Hungarian king, St. Stephen, as well as the capital of Hungary until the 13the century. After visiting the basilica take a right and visit the city itself. All around you you will find colourfull houses and picturesque fountains. Sit down on one of the many terraces, take in the view and enjoy some of Hungary’s delicious delicacies.
