Where is Lost Dutchman State Park
Lost Dutchman State Park sits perfectly poised at the base of Arizona’s legendary Superstition Mountains, just a short (and scenic!) 40-minute drive east of Phoenix. Nestled near the charming little town of Apache Junction, it’s an easy-to-reach haven where urban convenience meets rugged wilderness.
So whether you’re planning a quick day trip from the city or kicking off an epic Southwest road trip, Lost Dutchman is ideally situated to give you a taste of Arizona’s iconic landscapes—without straying too far off the beaten path!

How to reach Lost Dutchman State Park
Getting to Lost Dutchman State Park couldn’t be simpler, and trust me—you’re in for some dreamy desert views along the way!
If you’re starting your adventure from Phoenix, just hop on US-60 heading east toward Apache Junction, then switch over to AZ-88, also known as the Apache Trail. After about 5 miles of rolling desert hills and iconic cacti, you’ll spot the park’s entrance on your right—easy-peasy and impossible to miss.
Getting to Lost Dutchman State Park from Tucson is just as straightforward, and you’ll love every scenic minute of the drive! Simply hop onto I-10 West from Tucson, and cruise northward towards Phoenix. Once you reach the outskirts of the city, take the exit onto US-60 East toward Mesa and Apache Junction. From there, it’s just a short, cactus-lined ride on AZ-88 (the charming Apache Trail) for about 5 miles before the park entrance appears on your right. The entire drive takes around two hours, but with mountain vistas and classic Arizona landscapes rolling by, it’ll feel like your adventure has already begun!
Prefer to leave the driving to someone else? No worries—it’s also a fantastic day trip option with guided tours from Phoenix, perfect if you’d rather spend the ride snapping photos or daydreaming about hidden gold mines.

The best time to visit the Superstition Mountains
If you ask me, the Superstition Mountains have their magic year-round—but there’s definitely a sweet spot when this desert wonderland truly shines! The absolute best time to visit is between October and April, when Arizona treats you to sunny skies, gentle temperatures, and blooming wildflowers carpeting the desert trails. Imagine hiking under a clear, sapphire sky without melting in the midday heat—pure bliss, right?

But here’s a little insider tip: springtime (March and April) is the star of the show! During these months, the desert bursts to life with vibrant colors, and the trails become picture-perfect postcard scenes. Just keep in mind that summer months (June through September) are scorchingly hot, making hiking a sunrise-only activity.
So if you’re dreaming of exploring the Superstition Mountains in comfort and style, stick to cooler months, and you’ll see why this place is an absolute Arizona gem!

Best things to do at Lost Dutchman State Park
1. Enjoy a Relaxed Stroll on the Treasure Loop Trail
The Treasure Loop Trail is a must-do at Lost Dutchman State Park, especially if you’re looking for a hike that’s equal parts scenic and accessible. This 2.4-mile loop trail is rated as moderate and offers just the right amount of adventure for beginners or anyone wanting a more relaxed stroll through the desert. It gently winds along the base of the Superstition Mountains, giving you nonstop views of towering cliffs, iconic saguaro cacti, and, if you time it right, colorful bursts of wildflowers in the spring.
One of the best parts? The trail is super photogenic, especially in the early morning or late afternoon when the golden sunlight makes everything glow. You’ll also find plenty of spots to pause, snap photos, and soak in the views—so no need to rush. If you’re hiking during cooler months, it’s the perfect way to experience the beauty of the Sonoran Desert without needing to be a hardcore trekker. And true to its name, there’s a bit of magic in the air—after all, you are walking in the shadow of legends about lost gold and hidden treasure.

2. Tackle the Epic Siphon Draw Trail to Flatiron
If you’re up for a true desert adventure, the Siphon Draw Trail is hands-down one of the most exhilarating hikes at Lost Dutchman State Park—and it’s not for the faint of heart!
This trail starts out gently, winding through golden desert terrain dotted with towering saguaros and craggy rock formations. But don’t be fooled—the trail soon kicks it up a notch as you make your way into the actual “draw,” a natural wash carved into the Superstition Mountains. From here, the terrain gets steeper and more rugged, turning into a rock scramble that’ll have you using both hands and feet to ascend.
🥾 HIKING TIP – If you’re feeling extra adventurous (and experienced!), you can continue past the official trail’s end all the way up to Flatiron, the dramatic rock formation that dominates the skyline. This extension turns the hike into a 5.5-mile round trip with over 2,800 feet of elevation gain, so come prepared with sturdy shoes, plenty of water, and a good dose of determination.

3. Capture the Perfect Arizona Sunset or Sunrise
If you want to capture the golden glow over the superstition mountains then sunset is the way to go. Unfortunately during our visit the sky was completely overcast so we missed out on this spectacle.
But sunrise also offers plenty of photography opportunities! At the right time and angle you can capture an incredible sunflare and a cotton candy colored sky over the saguaro cacti.

4. Visit the nearby Goldfield Ghost Town
Just a quick 5-minute drive from the park entrance, this quirky little attraction is like stepping straight into the Wild West, complete with dusty streets, old-timey saloons, and tales of gold-mining glory.
Goldfield was a real boomtown back in the 1890s when gold was discovered in the Superstition Mountains. Miners flooded the area hoping to strike it rich, but like many Old West towns, the gold ran out and the town faded into legend. These days, it’s been lovingly restored and turned into a lively tourist destination packed with fun, family-friendly activities. You can wander through historic buildings, watch a staged Old West gunfight (yep, complete with cowboy hats and dramatic falls), and even take a ride on the narrow-gauge train that loops around the property.

Feeling adventurous? You can also explore the Goldfield Mine Tour, where you’ll descend into a reconstructed section of the mine and learn what life was like for those brave souls hunting treasure underground. And of course, no visit would be complete without grabbing a treat at the ice cream parlor or snapping a photo in full pioneer getup at the Old Time Photo Studio. It’s kitschy, fun, and the perfect little side trip to round out your Lost Dutchman adventure!
💡 TIP – There is free parking at the entrance of Goldfield Ghost Town.

5. Spend the Night Under the Stars
Pitch your tent at one of the dreamy campgrounds and enjoy magical sunsets that turn the Superstition Mountains into a fiery masterpiece. Bonus points if you bring marshmallows!
Where to stay when visiting Lost Dutchman State Park
When it comes to staying near Lost Dutchman State Park, you’ve got two dreamy options: rough it under the stars or kick back in cozy comfort. Whether you’re a tent-pitching adventurer or a plush-pillow kind of traveler, there’s something for everyone just minutes from the Superstition Mountains.
⛺ Camping at Lost Dutchman State Park
If waking up to golden sunrises and chirping desert birds sounds like your kind of vibe, then camping inside the park is a must. The campground here is seriously scenic, with both tent and RV sites that offer front-row views of the rugged Superstition Mountains.
Each site comes with a picnic table and fire ring—perfect for a cozy evening under the stars. There are restrooms, showers, and even electric hookups for a bit of comfort in the wild. Just make sure to book ahead, especially in spring and fall—it’s a popular spot for good reason!
🥾 HIKING – All of the best hiking trails at Lost Dutchman State Park start straight from their campground.
💡 TIP – We got super lucky cause on the day of arrival someone had cancelled their reservation and we were able to snag the last campsite. Know that it’s still best to reserve your spot in advance and that you can not use their online reservation tool for a same day online reservation. Then it is first come, first served. Even when I called the campground they couldn’t lock our spot down so we got really lucky!

If the campground at Lost Dutchman State Park is all booked up (it happens a lot during peak season!), don’t worry—there are a couple of great nearby alternatives where you can still sleep under the stars and soak up those gorgeous Superstition Mountain vibes!
- Usery Mountain Regional Park – Located just 25 minutes west of Lost Dutchman and a fantastic backup with equally stunning desert scenery. The campsites are spacious, well-maintained, and come with picnic tables, fire rings, and access to clean restrooms and showers. You’ll also find a ton of scenic trails right at your doorstep—including the Insta-famous Wind Cave Trail!
- Canyon Lake – This scenic campground offers tent and RV sites near the lake’s edge, with dramatic canyon walls all around. It’s a great spot if you want to combine your Lost Dutchman hikes with kayaking, fishing, or a scenic boat cruise. Just be prepared—it’s a bit more rustic and first-come, first-served, so arrive early to snag a spot!

🏨 Best Hotels Near Lost Dutchman State Park
Looking for something rustic yet ridiculously charming? Saguaro Lake Guest Ranch is about 40 minutes away and feels like a hidden oasis in the desert. Think: cozy cabins, horseback rides, and views that’ll make your jaw drop. It’s the perfect base if you want a peaceful retreat with a splash of Wild West charm.

If you’re after a comfy stay close to the park without breaking the bank, then Best Western Gold Canyon Inn & Suitess is a solid pick. Just a 15-minute drive from the trailheads, it offers clean, spacious rooms, a pool to cool off in after a hike, and mountain views right from your balcony. Bonus: it’s located near a few great local restaurants so you won’t go hungry after a long day on the trails.
